Cleaned and was playing around with my 3 1911's this morning. A SAM Government, a Nork Government from 4 years ago, and this newest addition to the family - the CanAm 1000 round special.
Out of the box, my SAM Government felt like it had the smoothest action, with nicer (and I think more easily replaceable) sights. I've only got about 150 rounds down the pipe with that guy. (I won it at a charity shoot last year and it's mostly been a safe queen... with all this ammo, that might just change).
My Nork 1911 Government from 4 years ago with probably 2000 rounds was next.
The Nork I just got from CanAm looked and felt slightly lower grade than my older one. On my older, broken in Nork:
- The bluing seems a bit nicer,
- The safety isn't as stiff,
- The slide stop is easier to take out,
- The trigger feels about the same,
- The barrel bushing was easier to remove,
- The action feels much less gritty,
- The sites are adequate, but nothing to get excited about on both (same site). I believe it would be quite difficult to replace either of them - I don't know how the front site would come off to be honest.
- The overall machining looks a little bit smoother
I don't recall what my older Nork was like was like when it was new - but on the CanAm special, I threw on some Hogue grips I stumbled across in my battery of gun parts, and it feels quite nice.
I'll note I paid $325 for that older Nork with 1 magazine when I first got into shooting handguns. If I consider the .45 ACP full priced, at $0.33/round, I would consider this $170 1911 with 2 magazines an EXCELLENT value.
I think the price differential accounts for what seems like an initial lower quality, but it may also be that with the older Nork I've run a few thousand rounds through it and I suspect (hope) that after being broken in, some of the kinks will just work their way out with the new one.
Not at all dissatisfied with my purchase. The price was right, and I'm really looking forward to breaking this bad boy out during my charity shoot tomorrow!
Thanks CanAm (pics to follow).
