Swiss Arms rifles being examined for reclassification?

Some history: the Swiss Arms were said to be based on the 540.

The Swiss Arms rifles we have here in canada are actually different than the the Sig 550. I don't have the link handy, but someone showed a side by side comparison of the two rifles. The main differences are that the bolt on the canadian rifles is missing a small groove that would normally actuate a link rod on the 550 which would basically prevent the hammer from dropping until the bolt is locked up. Also the lower is slightly different and is missing not only a few holes for some additional pins but also a small bulge in the metal where some of the 3-round burst and full auto parts would go. If it was the same as the 550 without these key parts I guess the government figured it would be too easy to just buy the 5 or 6 parts needed and then convert your rifle into a full 550. With the modifications they have done to the canadian versions you wouild have to do quite a bit of milling on the bolt and modification/welding to the receiver.

Without that link bar, on our rifles it is possible to pull the trigger when the bolt is not fully closed/out of battery. The hammer does not hit the firing pin at this point because of the geometry of the little triangular horn on the back of the bolt. you'll sometimes notice this if you can pull the trigger faster than the gun can cycle. On a true 550 this would not be possible as the connector bar shouldn't let the hammer fall until the bolt is locked up - this is one of the main ways that a firearm can operate "as fast as possible" and still be timed correctly. think of that bar as an equivalent to a camshaft on a car.

That is what I heard. He is confirmed the reason the BD38 folks had their rifles reclassed to prohib and I know that at his hearing about the Sten, he threw the other rifles under the bus as examples.

If this bull#### goes through we must march on Ottawa ! im sure most people can here can afford a plane ticket if not sell a gun if you have to ,, Just bring a tent we will camp out at the parliament . They got away with the BD38 and others so they think this will go the same way .. We cant let this happen ..
 
We should be discussing what action we are going to take instead of playing the blame game ,, its a waste of time and wont do anything positive .. Does this really have to turn into a thread about that goof ?? please no.
 
Who cares about that idiot , blaming him will do nothing its pointless , dont give him airtime it will just give him satisfaction .. i think our effort / comments should be focused on organizing a plan for action of some sort if this goes down .

This is simply rumor for now until we see written proof. There is no evidence to support a pending reclassification. Even if true, the RCMP would have to prove a legitimate reason for the move. It is not a variant of a named prohibited firearm. It is not "easily converted" to full auto. Therefore they cannot justify such a move.

Unlike other firearms that have been unilaterally reclassified such as the BD-38, Norinco Type 97A, High Standard Model 10B, the Swiss Arms family aren't "low hanging fruit". Combined, there were only a few dozen examples of the other reclassified firearms extant in Canada. With just a few dozen affected owners, the RCMP gambled on the apathy of the majority of Canadian gun owners. Sadly, it paid off for them.

That said, the attitude that unless I'm directly affected I don't care must end. We either hang together or we'll surely hang separately. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of Swiss Arms owners across the country and we have zero intention of rolling over.

However, it is these types of scares and threats that should see every Canadian gun owner making it a point to donate to the NFA's Legal Defence Fund, to give them the means to take on the deep pockets of taxpayer-funded Crown attorneys and sundry RCMP lawyers without having their hands tied because of limited funds. In the USA, the NRA's average monthly legal expenditures are somewhat north of $400,000.00! If you want change you need to start opening your wallets! Imagine a team of Solomon Freidmans and Ed Burlews that are 100% devoted to defeating bad gun laws and bringing rogue gun control bureaucrats,CFOs and crusading LEOs to task at every turn.

With the end of the LGR, it is possible that the RCMP may be dusting off their "hit list" of now uncontrolled non-restricted "problem" black guns and taking aim at them, one by one. If that is the case for the Swiss Arms here, then the time has come for a full offensive against the RCMP, the Public Safety Dept., and the Harper government. Whether through malice or simple disinterest, the powers that be need to learn they cannot continue to pi$$ all over Canada's law-abiding gun owners and expect us to buy the lie its raining!

No use destroying your own rifle. Let the rcmp do that if they get it. Encase it in a large concrete block. Let them go at with a jack hammer to get at it to throw in the smelter.
 
It's like I've always said, nothing safer than a concrete block. I'd bag it (What ever ends up in the bag with the rifle is your choice) as well just so the concrete doesn't get in the bore.
