So since forever I've wanted a short shotgun. No hunting (yet?) just trips to the range, as a hiking or camp gun if I want and a just in case there's ever an emergency that needs "fixing".
I found a Wingmaster but it's got a long barrel so here's the question.
Should I, keep looking for a 12.5-14" barrel that I can afford which I'm not having luck with, unless I want a Chinese or NEA.... :nest:
give up and grab a 18" and go pistol grip, or get a Dominion Arms Backpacker maybe an Outlaw since it's cheaper than the other options but will end my no Chinese gun rants.

What do you guys think? I'm in no rush so I could just wait and keep checking Dlask and all that, but 200 for a chinese nitro doesn't seem like the best plan of action.

I would go 18 inch 870 Remington with an adjustable pistol grip stock, and some night sights for sluggin. :)

Why not grab a Norinco barrel off the EE to use until you find something more, uh, whatever it is that you want? Dlask's barrels are $300 when instock, very heavy profile Ive heard and there was one posted with a really rough chamber. My Norinco 12.5" barrel was much nicer in comparison but like max_freddy I just don't like them for practical use. 18" or so with a +2 is my choice for a 12 ga. bush gun but I'm having waaay too much fun with my guide gun to dabble with shotguns for the time being. That being said I understand your desire to get what youre after so my Norinco suggestion stands. Theyre not as bad as you might think, and way cheaper.

I'm liking my Mossberg 500 combo, its the best of both worlds 28" field barrel and an 18.5 for around the campsite or HD

You want this...

Pretty...Mossberg?

Are shotguns under 18" barrels restricted?

Only if you cut the barrel to less than 18. If it's manufactured that way then your fine.

For what I do and want I'm sure the Norc barrels will be fine, I'm no gun expert or anything like that. And Supernova your right the Dlask ones aren't cheap. Originally I had planned on getting the Norinco for 150, then I read all the opinions on here about the various choices.
I think an 18" is likely long enough, an ultra short isn't needed but anything over 18 seems too long unless I'm going to hunt.
Although I still have sent any slugs down range I should see how much those kick first...

I've shot a pistol grip only Mossberg before and I'm not really sold on them, I'm sure with practice I'd be ok but meh.
Dexter I completely forgot about the Fab. Maybe I should save up for that.

i bought my 8.5 inch grizzly for pretty much what your looking for one for, i know its "china junk" but ive put thousands of flawless rounds through mine, a little stiff when new but pumps just as nice as any 870 ive used now.

also if your thinking just a pistol grip you should try some slugs outta one first, not saying it cant be done but a stock is way more practical (i have a pistol grip stock on my 8.5)

Slugs wouldn't beat my shoulders up but I doubt I'd hit the broadside of a barn either.

KSG not in the budget, I'd love to try one but short of getting some serious cashflow that's out.
Grizzly was a consideration I just happened to find the 870, I've still considered buying one for the barrel then EE the rest.
Mossberg was another option but no barrels less than 18, then again, the 870 showed up.

Ah the choices...

Hacksaw that wingmaster like a boss.

I hacked down my old Mossy from 30 to just over legal limit and I couldn't be happier.

If I ever want to hunt that gun again I'll just buy on of the many hunting barrels on the EE for $100 and call it a day.

Cut the Wingmaster, and put on a Magpul sga stock and you pretty much have shotgun perfection. I have had the Chinese barrels and promptly sold them. Dlask makes the only aftermarket barrels worth considering. I bought one of the 8.5 Chinese guns and it wouldn't feed shells out of the tube right out of the box. I had to completely strip it and give it a thorough de burring. While I was at it I replaced the trigger group and bolt with wingmaster parts. It's still just an ok gun not a great gun. The Chinese stuff seems to be very hit and miss. Some are ok right out of the box while others should go straight to the dumpster

I've actually had some pretty good luck with Norcs, I've had several 14's, 12's and most recently an 8.5". That said, I've usually shot them, changed the furniture, then sold them.

I've had this one since 2006, and it isn't going anywhere.
