Hey,

I am looking at getting a solid moose gun for this fall. I am in search of a pretty specific set of features.

I'd like the rifle to be:
-300wm, 338wm, or 7mm RM

-It needs to be removable magazine

-It needs a medium to heavy barrel (I'd like it to double as a bit of a target rifle for some fun in the off season)

Budget is around $1000 before optics.

I've held a Savage 11/110 (I think) at Sail in Oshawa. It felt alright, but I wasn't awestruck by the finish on the stainless steel. Made the gun feel kinda cheap to me.

I've seen that the remington SPS series comes in 7mm RM with the detachable metal, but for $500 msrp am I buying junk?

Thanks for any input

I cant really offer any other suggestions but I can say that the SPS is not junk...the stock is junk but the rest is okay. If it fits your budget, get the SPS and replace the stock. I'm looking to purchase the SPS AAC-SD in 308 and I have already ordered a replacement stock.

Just my 2 cents.

Have a look at the Tikka T3. It may not have the barrel contour you're looking for but any of the T3's I've owned have been accurate, reliable guns. I currently own a T3 lite in 30-06,my son has the T3 stainless laminate in 300WSM and 2 others in our moose camp have T3s as well. Bac4
P.S. Sims limbsaver recoil pad is your friend.

New Winchester M-70, you pick the model. They don't have removable mag's but, there highly over rated in my opinion. In the 42 yrs I have hunted moose I only ever fired all 6 rds out of my M-70 once, and I didn't need any more. One or two rounds is all thats usually necessary. The internal mag with a drop floor plate like the M-70 has is reliable, easy to keep clean, doesn't rattle around in your pocket, never gets damaged by dropping on rocks or in mud, easy to load and unload. What more could you ask for.

The standard grade M-70 will fit your calibre and barrel requirements and will be plenty accurate at the range. Currently have 3 of them so I have the experience with them.

Yea the M70's are pretty well reptued rifles on here. I currently carry a Sav 99, with the internal rotary mag. And it's a pain to keep loading and unloading every time I gotta hop on the quad or in the truck. So I am pretty well dead set on the DM magazine.

Thanks for the input so far guys

I picked up 700 SPS AAC-SD in .308 earlier this week. Haven't shot it yet, but it seems like a fairly decent rifle. Contemplating getting replacement bottom metal for detachable mags. A little heftier than my last rifle, but it gives me some incentive to exercise a bit more.

Browning A-Bolt Long Range Hunter (if you can find one) might work for you. I picked one up last year in 7mm Rem Mag, heavy fluted 26" barrel. Haven't shot it all that much, but I like it so far. I called Browning Canada to find out if a dealer in Ontario had ordered one, from there I made arrangements with the dealer, waited 6 month for it. Good Luck

Forget the magnum and check out a Remington 7600 in 30/06. Comes with a det mag, fast action, good handling, accurate and dependable. Moose are not hard to kill.

Don't pass up looking at the Savage Classic, wood stock, SS barrel and accu-trigger for under 700.00....also the 16/116fcss, SS barrel, accu-stock and accu-trigger for around the 700.00 mark. Both have detachable mags.
If you get the 16/116 package gun with scope mounted and detachable mag, I see that Boyd's stocks now lists 3 models of replacement laminate stocks inletted for the DM for under 100.00, I've been patiently waiting for a while for them to release a stock inletted for the detachable mag bottom metal...it makes buying the 11/111 package guns a little more tempting.
The Remington 700 sps SS rifles are a good choice and there are lots of options to upgrade pretty much everything on these rifles too.
As far as calibers a good all around round like a 30-06 is hard to argue against, personally I'd choose a 300 wm if I was only limited to one big game rifle.
Have fun! and remember if you aren't happy with what ever to buy, you can always either sell it or trade it for something else.

Take a look at the Tikka T3 it should come in around your price range or a little lower depending in the model you look at .They are a great gun with a good rep for accuracy and reliability right out of the box .

First off, a 308, 3006, 7x57, 280, etc is plenty of rifle to kill a moose - but if you want a little more get a magnum, I like the 338wm, others will differ but they all will work.

You seem to have your mind made up on drop bottom vs detachable magazine and as they both work I won't comment.

However, I would advise against getting a heavy barreled rifle that you are going to carry a lot. I am sure you can carry it all over but after a few years will you want to pack it all over. Maybe not. As well the stock design and trigger set up for punching paper is not the same as how one sets up for hunting. The more compromise one does the less suitable the end result is for either purpose.

I have very similar criteria to you (I want stainless, synthetic, detachable mag, 7mm Rem Mag, $1,000 for just the gun).

I looked at the Savage Weather Warrior and discarded it for two reasons:
1) It is MUCH heavier than the competition.
2) It is a rather long action with long spacing between the ring mounts - very little ability to adjust the scope mounting for eye relief (which I need).

I looked at the Tikka T3 lite stainless/synthetic and also discarded it for 2 reasons:
1) Read a lot about the gun kicking a lot more than comparable rifles.
2) For the $200-$300 more I much preferred the feel of the Sako A7 soft touch stock and the overall handling of the Sako.

So at the moment I have it narrowed down to three guns:
1) Sako A7 (burris scope package is a good deal, but not sure if I like the scope).
2) Browning X-bolt stainless stalker.
3) Weatherby Vanguard S2 stainless.
I will be fondling them in the same shop together this weekend.

Hope that helps.

Me.

You could ask for a detachable magazine.
