hi, i have the opportunity to buy a new haven made model 70 classic stainless,
currently i own a new FN produced model 70.

i am wondering if i am going to noticed an quality issues between the two, any feedback would be greatly appreciated before i conclude this transaction today.
thank you.
if its any help the serial number starts with "G"
thanks again for your time.

should also mention that i am buying this for the bolt and the action only as i plan to change everything out. but at the same time i dont want to have to work over the action excessivley to get it to par.

I have both a New Haven Stainless and the newer FN model Stainless and find them both very well made. I have read that some people complained about quality control with the New Haven's but haven't experienced that personally.

It's controlled feed, wouldn't buy it otherwise. I have an FN new production, fit and finish are top notch. The problem with buying a gun online is no matter how many pics you have sent you just never know if it's gonna be a dud. Hoping not. As far as I can make out G serials followed by 1 are not the last of the new havens so they aren't the worst for hit and miss QA.

It's a big risk. But I'm going to dive.

I bit the bullet, and took the offer. Hoping this is a good new haven one. It's one that came factory with the boss muzzle brake on it. But I'm going to re barrel it, and restock it. Anyone recommend a good barrel contour, twist and rifle for a 300wm, aiming for a hybrid hunting and LR target rifle.
So really I just bought an action. I'll post my thoughts when it arrives.

As most of you know I sing high praise of the new FN M70 CRF. I own one and have shot the older ~80's made guns. My FN is night and day better in every possible way.
That said the older M70s were nice guns. FN just really stepped it up a notch or two.
Good luck with your purchase please keep us updated with pics.

I'll post pics as soon as it arrives. My worry is that this is a mid 90's gun. Some say they are great and the new haven made ones didn't dive bomb til the bitter end, so we will see what I end up with.

Show me a New Haven(old M70's after 64) built better then this with CRF and I'll eat my keyboard.

With a nice load I can get sub MOA all day long and have a gun that will definitely be a family heirloom.

You're in Langley... I'm Abbotsford if you ever want to do a side by side PM me.
I love making new shooting friends.

Best of luck.

You'll notice a big difference between the two. In my experience, the FN one's are MUCH better finished. The last couple New Haven M70's I owned were horribly finished - the inside of the actions were galled so bad they looked like someone had attacked them with an engraving chisel. Mod 70 fans will bemoan the different trigger with the FN-made one, but the difference in quality control is like night and day.

There are periods in which the two are comparable but the FNs are far more consistent. I am a fan of the original trigger, that said I would build on a New haven over that alone.
You made a good decision.
Order a Shilen in a Douglas #4 contour. Have the shank finished at 1.75" and bed it all in a McMillan/Echols legend edge or Mcmillan Hunter Edge.

Oh gee! Thanks for piping up AFTER I purchased.... Well time will tell. I've read hit and miss with these mid 90's ones. So it was a risk I knew I was taking.

The new M70 trigger is out of the box as close to perfect as you can get in a factory rifle.
I've used tuned triggers on friends 700's,m77 and Tikkas and have yet to find something I prefer to the new FN MOA trigger in the M70.

Ok so stupid question, that I THINK I know the answer to;

I was asking a local dealer to get me an Model 70 in and his reply was... "I cant find any, and I looked online and production was stopped in 2006"... I said yeah but they started up again, not long after that. He was confused...

They ARE still being produced as of now though right?!?!? I'm not losing it??? Seeing as its one of the most well known, and highly regarded bolt hunting guns out there... and seeing as they had the 75th anniversary last year, I would hardly see them calling it quits...

I'd almost believe him if I didn't know better... I've been having a heck of a time trying to find one... No store I've been to has one (WSS has one as a wall ornament, but its a Magnum, and I don't need to compensate for anything, so....)

They SEEM to be non existant

Your dealer sounds like he doesn't really care about guns or buisness, much less being in the gun business. Fn m70s are widely available.

Most of my LGS are sold out of most models of the M70. They have been in production since FN purchased Winchester and brought them back some time around 2009.
Your gun dealer sounds like he would rather just sell you what he has on the self. I'd look elsewhere if I was you. Ignorance/deception should not be supported.
