Well I had the pleasure of playing with some shotguns this weekend. 12GA, 20GA. Remington 870, Mossberg 500, some type of Winchester and an old Cooey. Big mistake. Now I NEEEEEEEEED!

That's one wicked feeling. Makes a 22 feel like a Nerf gun!

Can't stop looking at em.

Thinking of an 870 for how customizable they are, Magpul stuff, etc. I think it'd also be fun to get something like a 500 Super Bantam or a 510 Mini. There are too many choices!

I've read lots on the 870s like getting a Wingmaster if I can get my hands on one, but I don't really care that much, any Express would suit me just fine for my first shotgun, right? I'm sure there are lots of people with preference for Mossberg over Remington and vise versa. Not looking to spend over $500 or $600 initially, but I definitely want pump action.

So many to buy, but I have so little knowledge on them!

Well, if you like the 870 and you plan on going mod crazy then it's the clear choice. An express is just fine, just read up on mag tube dimples if you are planning an extension. Since you want new furniture you might look at the 870 police in the EE being sold without a stock. That would be about as good as it gets ;)
 
The good thing about most pumps is that they are relatively inexpensive . So go ahead and buy one , later buy a different one then sell the one you like the least. Keep doing this till you are totally satisfied with what you got. This is what I'm doing and I'm about half way to a $8000 Beretta

My first inclination is to grab either the 870 Express or the 870 Express Tactical. $400 and $430 respectively at P&D. Couple hundred in furniture and I'm sure I'll be happy - but I'm also sure that could change within the first ten minutes of being in the store tomorrow.

I really like the sounds of that - minus the half way to $8000 part! Jebus! I can't get away with THAT. Would I be better off to grab an 870 or try and wait out the DA Grizzly? I'm a short gun guy - don't ask why, I just like em compact. It seems most of the 12GA are 18" barrels or longer...

I`m in the same camp got a Winchester SXP combo and am going wild ..lol not sure if I`ll see a more expensive one though although I have been Jonesing about a double barrelled piece of jewellry..
 
If you got the want for a really nice shorty, just bite the bullet (<-- see what I did there?) And save for a KSG. They are becoming more available now and if you want to skip the wait lists, sign up for Frontier Firearms news letter. They seem to bring in KSG's regularly with no wait list. They usually only pre-sell them a week in advance of acquiring them. Believe me! You will NOT regret it! It will come in however at 1223.xx after tax however. But worth every penny!

It's definitely been on my list of "wants" for months now. Never shot one obviously, but people rave about it everywhere I turn. I signed up for the newsletter, but I think I'll have a hard time spending that kind of dough on my first. I worry about the "plasticky" issues some people complain about. Of course, I have no valid frame of reference so it's obviously conjecture for me to say anything about it.

I got a Mossberg 590a1 as my first shotgun, but after playing around with a Benelli M4 (the desert camo one) at Grouse River in Kelowna....I NEED one at some point too! Though I will likely go for a non camo version with an adjustable stock.

I was really surprised by the weight, it felt lighter than my 18.5" 590a1 (though it does have a +2 extension and a 6 shot mesa side saddle). It felt completely solid but it looked like it would have been heavier.

Something about the pump action that is really appealing though....now I want to go shoot a box or two of shells
 
If you are dead set on an 870......and are wanting to do a lot of modding to it.....do yourself a favour, and find an older Wingmaster version! Streets ahead of what you can purchase new from remington.....IMHO!

Agreed! Get a nice, older Wingmaster. You will not regret it.
