You might have a look at the Forbes 24 B. 3006 is running about 5.5 lbs before glass. 308 based cartridges about 4 3/4 lbs. This is Melvin Forbes production version of his well regarded NULA customs. Order it up through Profit River.
Probably run about $1800 to your door before glass.
Same as thier Ruger Red Label shotgun series. The only one IMO, in the proper window of weight was the 28 gauge model. Is one allowed to use the words "Ruger" and "ultralight" in the same sentence? The International goes almost 7lbs without glass, and the Hawkeye with a 20" barrel is pretty damn close to 6 1/2 before glass.
Late-model Rugers are decent rifles but lofty they are not.
Very true, i made inquiery to buy myself a 257 WTBY mag and the MkV ultralight at 5 and 3/4 pounds... JP.How much ammunition should you carry and what does it weigh? Consider the military can carry a lot more ammo in 223 than in 308. How much weight saving do you have between 243 and 300WSM?
Weatherby makes an ultralite at 5 3/4 lbs. with a 24" barrel.
That's certainly a reasonable price considering what you get.
My original 700 Ti bought years ago when they came out was $ 1300...

Looking for a rifle that would weigh under 7 pounds with optics, but as light as possible. Short action, 20 inch bbl, 308, must look nice, but shoot even better. I am a fan of spiral fluting. Already have seen what savage and remington offer but i am looking for something higher quality. Heading up to a co workers hunt camp this fall but it is a long hike in and there no access for vehicles, so if you know of a good pack it would also be helpful

This must kick like a mule, I know your a big guy but a 300 WSM under 6lbs still must really let you know
Not goin to find lighter (or a slicker package in my opinion) than the Kimber Mountain Ascent. My .308 weighs 5lbs 15ozs with a real scope with turrets, 5lbs 8ozs with a 1-4x20mm Leupold VX2, 4lb 15oz bare. Seems to have all the features you want too, and is the lightest production rifle made, even with a full 22" barrel.

My 77/44 is 5.25 lbs before glass.
It's actually not too bad at all, it is picky about loads and the one I've settled on is 150 gn TTSX. I put it together for sheep and goat hunting so the 150 is ok and I would have no qualms with a grizzly with that TTSX bullet. Also the Kevlar stock tends to absorb recoil better than wood or plastic, one of the reasons Brown developed the Kevlar stock. It also does not have a recoil pad, more just a skid plate. I have found that I neither hear nor feel a rifle fire when I'm shooting game and although I've shot it a lot off bags finding a load it is not meant to be a range rifle, she's a high country huntin' rig. Oh ya and it has a full 24" barrel !!
