I'm planning on getting a semi auto tactical 12ga soon and am mainly looking at the Mossberg 930 and Remington 1100/11-87. I know that the mag tube is for 5 of the largest shells the gun is capable of firing and know that fitting six 2 3/4" shells in a 3" gun is fairly common. However, if I were to get the 935 or remington super mag (3.5") would I be able to fit seven 2 3/4" shells if it is plugged at 5.9 3.5" shells.

More or less trying to figure out if it would be worth the extra couple bucks for a 3.5" gun.

Short answer: Yes you would.

The magazine limits are based off the ammunition the magazine is designed for. If it's designed to fit 5 3.5" shells and you can fit more than 5 2.75" shells than you are good to go with as many 2.75" shells as will fit. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but, I'm fairly certain I'm correct.

"...tactical 12ga..." There's no such thing. 'Tactical' is a marketing term that increaes your cost, only.
"... if it is plugged..." 'Plugs' come out. Or should. In any case, mag capacities for shotguns are altered by changing the follower and spring in like chambered guns.
"...caught duck hunting with..." In Ontario, the hunting regulation about mag capacity applies to hunting anything , zombies included. snicker.

OP

2.75 x 7 = 19.25
3.5 x 6 = 21

Need 20" of mag and your good to go on a 3.5" gun

Bear in mind that length (2 3/4, 3, 3 1/2) refers to the unloaded hull, loaded rounds are appreciably shorter. On average a loaded 2 3/4 is 2 5/16 inches and a loaded 3 inch is 2 1/2 to 2 5/8 inches, so you will have to redo your math. There are also variations in loaded ammo length between manufacturers. Spring and follower length factor in as well as they take up space wthin the tube, based on design and make/model of shotgun, so it is difficult to give a generic answer.
