Am trying to figure out what rifle ill be usingthis year for deer...it will more than likely be a marlin 336Y or a Marlin/Rossi 44 mag (unless a wild Ruger Carbine appears lol)...What's everyones opinion on these two cartridges...I can get a great deal on the 30-30..but from what Ive read a 44 mag will knock a deer on its ass compared to a 30-30...and with the type of hunting im doing (with dogs) that wouldnt be a bad thing.....ANy general knowledge to help me decide would be great

THanks

A 44 Mag would be just fine at 70 yards or less. However the 30-30 is far superior at increasing yardage on whitetails.
I guess it really depends on the terrain you are hunting. Myself, if I had only one choice, I would purchase the the thirty thirty with zero regrets.
Besides that, what if you see the buck of your dreams, standing still & broadside at 150 yards?

ummm....shoot it??

I'm guessing someone offering advice in this thread has never looked at the ballistics tables for the 44mag out of a rifle barrel...

I guess I should have told that 420 lb blackie that my 240JSP was supposed to bounce off of him at 120 yards last year....maybe if he knew he would have laughed at me instead of bang-flopping.... ;)

Was that supposed to be helpful?

I like my 44 mag...

yommoma, got trajectory tables that have the same zero point?

The 30-30 you show zeros at 100 , the 44 at 50.

From a rifle the ballistics are close enough that the deer won't be able to tell. If the shooter can hit it, it'll die.

Whassit they say about a big bullet moving slow? Eat right up to the hole. No bloodshot mess of bruised meat to deal with.

Gonna all be up to the shooter.

Cheers

30-30 wins hands down when compared to a traditional handgun cartridge. Many muzzleloader powder / bullet combos generate the same - if not less - horsepower than a 44 Mag and accomplish some amazing feats though, so don't discount it.

I was out shooting not that long ago with a fellow gummutters and he had those two chamberings
with him.
One in a Marlin lever (44) and the other in a Savage bolt (30-30).
Well didn't I learn a lesson.
I set up a round plate that was out there for a target back stop.
Not the brightest thing to do, but the results were sure rewarding.
The plate I am guessing to be around the 1/4" thick sort. Maybe a tad
thicker.
The 44 made a dent, a healthy one in the plate.
The 30-30 bullet went plumb right on through.
That my fellow folks surprised the poop right out of me.
Yardage was over 100, 114 I think.
I have a few photos on my camera for those in doubt.
I gained a tad more respect for the cowboy cartridge.

Performance wise they are similar and both are good short range brush rifles for deer. I would go with the great deal on the 30-30. Then go out and practice with it - being able to accurately place you bullet will have far more effect than any difference between cartridges.

No big surprise there. The 30-30 bullet was going faster, has a smaller diameter. It's a better choice if you want to put a hole through some steel. Doesn't really give us any valid measure to compare the performance on game of the 44 vs 30-30 though.

I have never shot a deer with a .30-30 but I have dropped 4 of them with a .44 magnum. Never should have sold that little Ruger.

"...compared to a 30-30..." The .44 Mag is in no way comparable to any rifle cartridge. It's no big deal out of a rifle.
"...Knocks them right down..." So does any other suitable rifle cartridge. It's all about shot placement.
Don't be taking a butcher's advice on what rifle to use. He's likely thinking in terms of meat damage.
