Hey there. Looking for a scope for a 308 bolt action rifle.

most shots in the 300-500yd range, but want to reach out to 800 or even 1000yds. the kicker is that it needs to be useful at close range too. I also want to be able to have it useful for under 100yd in case I have to defend myself from larger canadian critters. I know some scopes (nightforce) have a lever were you can zero it out for target acquisition.

Thoughts and direction much appreciated.

Sightron would be my choice for low budget (I have a PST on my lr rig for the record), if you have a bit more money then I would buy the used US Optics in the EE for sale.

Though I don't anymore own one of their scopes I still like the Sightron line-up for value for money. I would have recommended a 8-32 for the OP until I saw the line about defend self from animals under 100 etc and realised that the OP wants one of those scopes that does double duty - nice target scope and yet the wide field of view associated with the scopes you put on your hunting rifle. I'd try and dissuade the OP from looking for a compromise scope but if set on that then I'd say look for something in the 6-24 range and keep it dialed down to 6 when out in the bush.

thanks everyone for all the feedback and detailed models. I need to do some homework on the model features and reviews. to answer the question, budget $1k +/- depending.

Leupold 3.5 - 10 x 50 mm target knobs.
If you are using this for hunting, you can't beat the 3.5 power with the light gathering of the 50mm objective.
Moose hunting a few years back, early morning fog.
Couldn't see squat on 10 power, 3.5 allowed me to see some tree detail and figure out what I was pointing at.
10 power has been used forever on the range.
Mirage is kept to a minimum, target knobs handle the fine tuning.
Classic tactical scope. Just add mil dots.
SRSA311

ok finally getting back to this project.

gonna ad First Focal Plane to my list of requirements. Horus reticle & illuminate as "nice to haves".
for my budget narrowed it down to:

Sightron SIIISS
6-24X50 LRFFPMH http://info.sightron.com/Riflescopes/SIII Series/SIIISS624X50LRFFPMH/

Vortex Viper PST EBR-1 MRAD RETICLE in either
4-16x50 FFP
2.5-10x50 FFP http://www.vortexoptics.com/product...fp-riflescope-with-ebr-1-mrad-reticle/reticle

Bushnell Elite Tactical ERS with G2 reticle in either
3.5-21x50 FFP http://www.bushnell.com/all-products/rifle-scopes/elite-tactical/ers-3-5-21x-50mm
6-24x50 FFP

leaning toward the vortex... but would appreciate feed back from owners of any of these scopes.

happy holidays!

Of those choices...the Bushnell hands down...
Go on snipershide...you won't find any posts that won't back up that advice...
