Ruger Gunsite Scout

Well, looks like it's on the list for acquisition. What's the best that anyone has seen these going for? Looks like $899 is the magic number, though I did notice that Grouse has one that comes with a muzzle brake for over 1K.

Not in stock though, and when I sent them an email they weren't even sure if they'd get one with the brake..

No perfect scout rifle has ever been made in my opinion.

The ruger is a good rifle, but as far as bolt actions go, it is pretty much the tractor of bolt actions... works pretty much all the time, but very rough in operation.

It's a good gun, but the whole thing could have and should have been lighter.

Could you provide an example of more refined scout rifle? In bolt action that is?

The Steyr has better fit and finish, feeds more smoothly, has a better trigger, and probably a higher quality barrel, as well as the typical Germanic type gadgets - pop up sights, room for a spare mag, etc.

That said, the Ruger is likely a more robust rifle, and given what a Scout rifle was designed to do, is probably a "better rifle" though certainly not as refined. It's like comparing a BMW car to a Ford F-350.

Ok, what is more refined? Why would a half a pound of weight and primitive integrated bipod of styer be more refined than thick barrel and robust action of ruger?

Well, assume for a second that we neglect fit and finish and difference in price. Just for the same design styer has thin barrel and push feed and ruger has crf and thick barrel, right?

Is so, how one is more refined than another? No fun intended, really, I'd like to see the logic. I though the ruger scout was quite decent engineering concept in a budget form. But apparently 300 grams of weight is making it "not pure Cooper rifle"?

Well, in this case I was referring to vision. A quick search on the intertubes reveals that quality and manufacturing actually obviously lacks in steyr scout.

Would this be closer to "the vision"?

Based on the specs, I don't see anything that that rifle offers over the scout in its "steel" configuration. The "Light" one does definitely offer some weight savings but that's about it in my opinion.
Those sights don't look as good and the stock is fugly. I do like the extra sling mounts though, those are pretty sweet. How much does one of those go for?

They are... it is cheaper to hire a scout to accompany you with a rifle. :)

However, it seems to me that its quite unreasonable to expect a rifle in 308 much lighter than 6 pounds. Or much shorter barrel than 18 inch.

The only better deal I can think of is CZ 527 carbine, but it is weaker round. Other than that nothing seems to hit the requirements apart from lever action.

I played with a Steyr Scout at The Shooting Edge and I wasn't a fan... it just felt too fisher price with all the plastic (even though I know it sure as hell is not!). The pop up sights are cool, but really nothing more than a back up considering the rear aperture looks like it would break off fairly easily. I like the bipod idea, but I was afraid of the sound it made every time I folded it back up - almost like it was snapping, and the action seemed to lack the substantial "feel" that I like (my personal preference, I know objectively that steyr makes a damn fine action).

So... in my mind, I prefer the feel of my Ruger Scout to the Steyr Scout. Different strokes for different folks really.. just like I'd rather drive a pickup than a small BMW sedan (but that is just me and everyone is entitled to their own opinions and preferences).

Side note: Last I heard, Ruger doesn't sell firearms with threaded barrels to Canada so I'm not sure how Grouse River gets those flash suppressor equipped (NOT muzzle braked) Scouts.

I'm kind of on the fence about the Ruger Scout like BUM. It's scout like but could have been executed far better.

- stock is kind of chunky, could loose some weight with a synthetic, would be nice to have a second mag mounted in the butt stock
- rear sight is too obtrusive, something along the lines of a Brno 602 pop up peep would be much more elegant
- front sight could have been a banded/hooded one like NECG, the rabbit ears do nothing for me
- plastic trigger guard ect. is cheap, I'd rather metal
- I wish Ruger would do away with their proprietary scope mount and just mill in some picatinny slots like the TC Icon, this would expand the mounting options dramatically
- I question the need for a forward mounted optic rail when we now have tiny red dots that can be mounted unobtrusively on a short front picatinny rail
- the option for a threaded brake would be nice
- barrel profile is a little heavier than needed

As usual a good concept that has been executed poorly. I would gladly pay $1500 if it was refined just a bit more.

Someone should make a stripper clip loading slot that mounts onto the rear ruger scope mount.

Ruger seems to enjoy supporting the aftermarket industry so perhaps that's where the "fixes" will come from.....
