One of the interesting things about Gun Collecting is that you never know what you will find. Yesterday, I made a bulk purchase of several Milsurps, just to get the one I wanted. I left the details of that "one" out until I visited SMELLIE today.

Something SMELLIE and I have fun with is showing new acquisitions to each other. It is also a fun game of "one upmanship" when we amuse ourselves by getting something the other does not have, or something that is a bit different than a rifle or other item that the other one does have.

Included in the lot of rifles I bought were two 1908 Brazilian Mauser rifles in 7x57 calibre. One was made by DWM - Berlin and the other one was made by DWM - Oberndorf. Many Collectors of the Mauser rifles consider the 1909 Brazilian Mauser the best one made, because of the care and workmanship that went into them. The 1908 Brazilian Mauser is considered the second best Mauser made.

Now, knowing that SMELLIE had 1908 Brazilian Mauser Serial Number 25, I took my newest rifle with me when I visited him. After sucking up a cup of coffee, and dispersing the usual BS as we usually do, I casually reached around the corner of the wall, got hold of my Mauser, and handed it to him asking what he thought of it.

After looking it over generally, he got to the Serial Number. I never realized that SMELLIE has an astonishing vocabulary of words that should never be heard in polite company, or even maybe in a bar room brawl. TWOSTEAM even had her hands over the Cat's ears.

The Serial Number on mine is Number 20.

SMELLIE has sequestered himself in the Sock Closet, taking his Armaquerra with him. He knows that I do not have one of those --YET.

TWOSTEAM is at the C0-Op buying a couple of dozen thin crust Pizzas, so that she can slip them under the door of the Sock Closet during feeding time. So if SMELLIE does not answer any e-mails or PMs for a few days, I am afraid that I am the cause of that.

In the picture below, you will notice the S**T eating grin on my face, and the look of shock on SMELLIE's. Also, you will notice two 1908 Brazilian Mauser 7x57 rifles, serial numbers 20 and 25. Lightning does strike twice - SMELLIE got his many, many years ago, and I got mine this week.

buffdog, we have a lot in common: gray hair, bellies, facial hair and gun love.

Congrats on your latest acquisition.

That's an interesting story. So the serials are just straight 20 and 25? No letter block?

Congrats on a great find! The Oberndorf ones are a little harder to find than the Berlin ones.

Congrats! Very interesting indeed. Thanks for sharing.

Funny how sometimes very close serial numbers surface together.

I have noticed in Canada many duplicates I encounter of various milsurps are often to close to others I've seen, mostly to do with very old imports I'm guessing.

He should see the doc about that lump on his head. Looks uncomfortable.

ovrec sock closet again! Buffdog; something's are best left untold, what the he11 are the rest of us going to do without Smellie around!! You are a selfish, self serving bugger! The last time Smellie went to the sock closet it was months (and untold pizza's) until he ventured out again!...I hold you responsible if I screw up one of my Enfields. Actually, you have just put me out! I won't even attempt to fix my damn crack now that Smellie's in the closet...way to go! Sheesh!

You, sir, are an ID8OT. George has some problems with water retention, and that is not something that some fool should comment upon. This is a Gun related Forum and if you can not say something nice about someone, without pointing out physical appearances, disabilities or other similar things, then you should bloody well keep your fat mouth shut. Someone with over 5000 posts here should have a little bit of common sense by now.

Do you not think that he has had visits with Doctors and treatment for that illness? Nobody needs some Clown commenting upon their appearance.

What an inconsiderate thing to say! Perhaps you can post a picture of your gleaming perfect face and body so we can have a look at you, and comment on that.

Now if this post gets me a demerit from a Moderator, then it will be worth it, because I will also insist on one for you too.

Quite frankly, if I can not say something good about someone, then I do not talk about it. In your case, sir, I am speechless.

Dude you have it all wrong, i dont know your friend and I dont know his medical history. I just noticed that bump, and like my dad who had a similar bump and didnt get it checked out, it turned out to be something nasty. I know how some older old school guys are tuff and dont go to doctors no matter what. I work for a Fire Dept, I did EMT training , was just saying he should get it checked out. If he has, then great.

As well my face isnt that pretty. And i understand disabilities myself as i have MS. So far im doing well but it can change in a heartbeat.

Apology and explanation accepted. We, his friends and acquaintances, get a whole lot defensive when someone comments on his illness. He has had to put up with that problem for most of his life and has accepted that it will not really change. Appearances are deceiving though, because between those ears is a very brilliant mind.

Today, our younger generation seems to think that comments, snide remarks, criticism, and other unsocial behaviour is all right, as long as they are the one that are doing it. When it is done to them in return, they start screaming like a raped ape. Us "old farts" were brought up to give respect to those who earn and deserve it, to treat people fairly, to be honest, and other similar values.

Unfortunately, on the Internet, we can not get a tone of voice or inflection of what is being typed, so sometimes things come across in a way we do not mean. Thanks for clearing this up, and if I too jumped on it a bit quick from the way I perceived it, then I also apologize to you.

No worries, he is lucky to have a friend like you. Loyal friends that will stand up for you are getting harder to find these days, at least in my age bracket, why I tend to hang out with older folks like my older brother for example. I meant no disrespect to your friend whatsoever.

Buffdog you are a bad man!!!! There's that S**T eating grin I mentioned yesterday.

To those of you that don't know Buffdog, he is a good guy and has his Phd in wise arseing. That same grin often comes out on the range while he directs me 4' off target while spotting my 300 yard shots. Then I'll look over and see him quickly remove the trademark Buffdog grin!!

I know how to get Smellie out of the sock closet but we'll need a .280 Ross, some Kropatschek ammo and a Werndl rifle :).
