southeastern sask deer. how do they look?

how are they looking down in the southeast corner specifically zone 31? i know they've had couple real rough winters, and the poplation is down some. heading out this weekend to put out some trail cams.
 
From what I have seen they took a big hit last winter. I've been scouting the last 2 1/2 months around Rocanville and some nights you're lucky to see a momma & a fawn.

Up around PA numbers are down as well. Not really seeing anything driving around and the fields that I hunt are way down. Last year there were 15-20 resident deer around one 80 acre patch this year there are five. Hopefully I'll see a few more once things get cold and I get time to travel out a bit further.

Seven months of solid snow is going to take a toll no matter how you slice it. With some luck we'll be in a dry phase with regards to snow. I know the prairies need water but the best hunting for deer ad upland birds has always been in drought years.
 
Numbers are way down here in 45, 47 too. I bought my either ### and antlerless tags but don't plan on using either unless I stumble across a monster buck. I have two antlerless mulie tags I'll use to fill the freezer. May not even bother with them if I get a moose this month. I'm thinking about spending a few days in moose mountain park elk hunting in january too so really deer aren't my focus at all this year.
 
Off topic. But just curious, is chronic wasting disease a big issue in saskatchewan? Do you have any concerns about eating dear meat?
 
I made inquires with the Game Wardens in Spiritwood and Big River and the hunting season looks very bleak. Fewer deer have been sighted because of the high mortality noted in the spring. A hunter will have to hunt very hard and rely on a lot of luck to harvest a deer, let along a big buck. Knowing me I will still have the tag in my pocket after the season is done, been there done that many times. Hopefully Old Man winter won't be so harsh on them this winter.

I picked-up the latest Western Sportsman Magazine and it stated that S.E. Saskatchewan looked promising. I imagine that there will be zones that are good and some not so good to hunt through out the province. Good luck to the OP!
 
This spring/summer I was working in the SW of the province.

Lots of animals west of Tompkins!

Not many west of swift current. East none at all!

I just spent 10 days elk hunting in 48,59 & 56.... I saw 5 WT deer that whole 10 day stretch.......

It's looking bleak......
 
Im in the north end of 44 and not seeing much on cameras this year. Last year want bad but this year not looking so good. I have 6 pictures since beginning of august and 2 are of a moose.
 
I have been hunting the Southeast every year since 1964. I own farmland in 33. This year I will not be buying a license. Two of the last three years have been real deer killers. This spring we had to haul dead deer out of the yard. There were so many the coyotes did not even clean them up. The biologist for this area recommended the season be shut down but it seems a strong lobby by a few farmers kept it open. Some of them think one deer is a deer to many. My land will be closed for hunting for the first time. Our deer need all the help they can get right now.
 
I was south of Estevan for pheasant this last weekend. South of Torquay to be exact.....

We saw a grand total of 9 WT deer, 3 moose and 3 dozen pheasant......

We all bagged our limit of pheasant, so all in all it was a beautiful sunshiny day!

But the deer are looking sparse. In comparison last fall hunting birds, we saw too many deer to count!

I say the CO's lied to you. I have seen plenty of deer from Spiritwood area, Chitek Lake, Big River, Meadow Lake they are still abundant up this way. Didn't look like it at first but since the fields have been coming off I have seen the numbers rise. I seen a true 6x6 whitetail just two days ago. Always when your not hunting do you see deer like that. Just thought you would like another's point of view from up this way.
