Well, we were supposed to be goat hunting this week but Vanessa took a very innocent looking fall on the way into goat camp and ended up breaking both her radius and ulna on her left arm. She was wearing a 55 pound pack at the time which likely caused the break. We fashioned a splint out of some branches and a tensor, made a sling out of one of my shirts and loaded her up with Tylenol before beginning the long journey out. We had a 2.5 hike through some very steep and very nasty terrain, then a one-hour quad ride on a very rough and sketchy trail, then 16 kms in the truck on a rough logging trail and finally a three hour drive on pavement to the hospital. She was one tough cookie and took it all in stride.

It just goes to show, however, that one needs to be prepared for the worst when out hunting because things can.....and will go wrong. Knowledge of first aid is critical, as is having the right gear with you paramount. It's a very bad injury that will require surgery but as always, it could have been worse.

Hope she recoops soon... Nice that you guys have that hunting relationship and have been following your threads over the last few years... Hope she's right handed and the hunt can continue during the healing period... Best wishes

Hope she recovers and heals well! The ladies are tough. My wife snapped her collar bone horse riding, rode back, took the tack off the horse, drove to a clinic (5 spd too!) for a quick x-ray to confirm, then drove herself to a supply store for a brace, putting it on when she got home.

Bummer. When you got her to the hospital, did they take her aside and ask if it was REALLY a case of domestic violence. Standard procedure for an injured woman in the ER.

Grizz

Surprisingly not...heck they even let me help pull on her arm when they were trying to get the bones lined back up.

That's too bad, I'm glad she's mostly alright. As you said, taking a tumble in the steep stuff with a hefty pack on could have gone a lot worse. Hope she heals up well.

Kudos to your wife for being tough enough to handle it all and you for being able to take care of her. Too many head out with no clue and no backup. Best wishes on a speedy recovery for her!
Irony is I leave for a week with my father hunting goats tomorrow. Time to go double check the first aid kit....

Women are generally tougher than men. The better half wiped out about ten years ago. Ended up with seven screws and a plate in her ankle to give you an idea. She was alone, so she reached down straightened things out, hopped in the house, got a pair of crutches and made her own way a couple blocks to the hospital on foot. Vanessa had a long hard journey there. How did you manage to avoid shock? Hopefully a quick recovery with no complications.

.....breaking both her radius and ulna on her left arm
I had to look those up - Yikes! And major BUMMER!

Would some walking sticks have helped her steady herself before the fall - or was she already using them?

I've broken a few bones and there was always that point where the pain did get annoying and some pharmas sure helped.
