I need a sling for my remington 700 for hunting. Edit to add it is a traditional wood stock with traditional studs. The only sling I have used are basic nylon ones and my favourite is "the claw" by quake. The pad is a molded rubber kind of deal and the rest is nylon webbing kind of stuff.

Someone reccomended a different kind of sling and I think the idea with it is that you carry the rifle in the low ready position if I remember correctly? What are they called? This makes sense to me, but I suppose I could use a traditional sling to carry the rifle on the off shoulder, muzzle down in order to get it up quickly?

I suppose that the first thing it needs to do is comfortably carry the rifle, the next thing it needs to do is be able to help me steady the rifle for long shots and finally it should look decent. The rifle is blued with a wood stock so leather would be nice on the rifle, but not essential.

So what do you guys think? What is your favourite hunting sling for this style of rifle? It will be used for Ontario deer and moose hunting. Most of the shots are quick and close, but there are plenty of opportunities for long shots in the cuts.

My favorite sling is the BFG VCAS, you can get them from One Shot Tactical. I just ordered another padded one for my Rem700.

However, Iv'e noticed that the main problem with changing how it is slung is that not many "hunting" rifles are set up for, or support, having the sling mounts on the side of the rifle as is necessary for having it slung in front of you without flipping upside down. I have a side mount on my Remington 700 due to it being in an MDT LSS chassis with a magpul PRS, but the front sling mount is still on the bottom of the forestock so it has a tendency of trying to flip upside down when suspended from the sling.

It definitely helps with steadying the rifle, once you get it adjusted, because all you have to do is bring up the foreend with your off hand and the buttstock is essentially right where it needs to be. Sized appropriately, the sling will be snug when the rifle is shouldered.

You can still use the VCAS and other front carry slings with a traditional hunting rifle with sling mounts on the bottom, but it's not ideal since the rifle will be trying to twist around on you.

Length is fully adjustable, there is a short loop at the ends of the sling that cradle the fore end and butt stock and keep the gun upright while slung in front as in its designed purpose. The back loop falls off the back of the butt stock when shouldering and it works well. because of the design, it is a bit floppy when used as a traditional over the shoulder sling, but does work in a pinch. It is a great rig, comfortable to carry a rifle at the ready for long periods of time, but like all gear is best suited to its intended use and may not be a "jack of all trades. For 28$, it wouldn't hurt too much to give it a whirl. ymmv.

The brand and type I like is no longer made. Once I adjust the length of the sling to what I like I have never ever changed it. So now I go to "Tandy Leather" buy a 1" length of oil tanned leather strap and some brass screw bolts and make my own. Good and sturdy, they will never break, and have the look, feel, and function of exactly what I want for about half the money of all that crap you see in the stores.

The new slings which are two layers of leather sewn together are too hard to conform to the inside of my shoulder.
The neoprene one's tear at the stitching.
I have two Levis which are a single thickness of leather and they stay on your shoulder.

Thank you for all the sugestions guys, especially boomer. That ching sling looks like a winner, very interesting. I see how you use it like a safari sling on the front part and I assume that it loops around the butt as well? It looks like you can get your rifle better stabilized and do it faster with that design. Anyone know if there is another manufacturer that makes the same design? The uncle mikes tactical shotgun sling looks very similar. Galco is very appealing and I don't mind spending the money, but I am trying to find one locally, or get one shipped quickly.

The Safari Ching Sling uses a split cobra strap main sling, which attaches to 1" swivels front and rear. A cobra strap widens from the attachment point at the front swivel from 1" to 2" for great contact with your shoulder when the rifle is slung. The tail of the sling is where it is adjustable for length. Between the two halves of the split length, is a horse shoe strap, which is also adjustable for length. You simply pull up the horse shoe on the back of your arm when you wish to sling up to shoot from a supported position.

I've ordered several products from Galco International (a few Safari Ching slings and a couple of holsters) and they have always arrived in about a week, without any fuss whatsoever. You could try Laroche Leather (819-684-0390). He is a custom leather guy in Quebec, who will copy anything you like, and he is pretty quick, but not as fast as ordering an in-house product from Galco.

I ordered a Safari Ching Sling earlier this year after reading one of Boomers endorsements. Ordered through Amazon, it came from Optics Planet and arrived in about a weeks time. I really like the sling, and it does what it says it will do, namely help stabilize your rifle in the shooting position. If I had to say anything negative about it, it would be that it can be a bit of a pain when slinging a rifle over a pack. My old narrow nylon sling would hitch up between the pack strap and my neck and carry well. Because of the width, the ching sling tends to pop over the shoulder strap and want to slide off my shoulder. No issues without a pack, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.
