Hey
Just wondering what everyone uses for bear bait and how do you go about setting things up?
Would like to hear some ideas that work for everyone and what kinda luck you have catching your bears.
Thanks
Sebaz

I like to get started a couple of weeks before the hunt. Donuts work great if you can get them. This year I bought bread, pancake syrup, sardines and white sugar and dumped it all into a barrel about 30 yards from my stand. I ended up shooting my bear about 100kms from that spot as I walked leisurely through the forest with my rifle. My bait was very active, though. If you can bait once a week leading up to the season and then every other day when hunting. You should score. When you're setting up your bait/stand, just pay special attention to where the sun is setting so it isn't glaring in your eyes and watch that the prevailing winds aren't blowing your scent toward the bait. Go hammer'em.

Beaver carcasses, if you can get them. ;) Tough to beat and a lot of trappers here save them for that purpose. Bear works as well, bears don't mind eating their fellows. Cooking oil from your local fast food and the list goes on.

Donuts, dead chickens, old fry oil, fish of any variety....anything smelly. Also...so they keep coming back even if they get all the food before you can replace it, molasses in those plastic woven feed bags hung in the tree. You can buy it bulk from feed stores for horses and they usually give you the bags as well. It will seep through the bag and drip on the ground. Lasts for weeks and keeps them coming back. Just make sure the bag is out of reach.
Good luck!

I'm not big on bear hunting but I've got a Buddy who collects old freezer burnt food from peoples freezers to toss in the bait barrels. He claims its as good as anything else he's ever used, and has been doing it for close to forty years. Who am I to argue? I just donate old inedible stuff from my freezer.
