Question about SKS storage

Cool, just tried that and it works well thanks... so in your opinion it hurts the spring? Is that why you say store it closed?

Please stop fu<king around with loaded guns in your moms apartment...a little kid died near here not long ago when some wantabe zombie killer fired a .45 round through the ceiling accidentally killing the kid sleeping above in his bed. You know what really drives me nutz is people even asking these pant loaded questions in the first place!

Now, if you happened to be at the range when you responded you have my full apologies...if you weren't, you need to grow up and understand that gun ownership puts you in legal jeopardy more often than not and if you choose to act like a dickhe@d with them one of two things will inevitably happen 1) you hurt or worse yourself or others. 2) you run foul of the law and are caught.

I sincerely hope it's the latter case for your future...if you don't smarten up!

{gawd, I sound like my old man!?}

I'm wondering if there is any negative affect on storing my SKS with the bolt in the open position. Previously I always stored it closed because I thought it was better to have less tension on the spring when stored for a few weeks or more. However I switched to Tapco 5/20 mags and like the idea of it being stored in my gun safe ready to have a preloaded mag popped in on short notice.... you know incase the Zombies show up one night ;)

Anyway what is everyones opinion, should I store it closed or open (FYI the it has to be open to load the mag) does it affect the spring do you think?

In 2114 some one finds a 1951 SKS in a cave. Cocked and locked. Full load mag. Rusty, but still works every second time.

Holy #### man relax who said the mag was loaded... I never load live rounds in my home. I took the Tapco empty and loaded it into the SKS pushing it in after pulling the bolt back like Tyler suggested. LOL My Mom's apartment. I'm in my 40's and own my own house thanks

You know what they say about ASSUME right except you didn't make and ass out of me just you

You can apologize anytime now

How do you close the bolt on an empty seated mag?
Why do you own a HD shotgun with a loaded shell caddie?
Why do you believe the sks to be an Armalite ( ninja quick mag changes)?
Why am I wasting my time? Be safe ALWAYS, try and be smart...usually.

I hope nobody's hurt keeping your company, and I fear for your neighbours.

You don't have to close the bolt to see the theory will work, I simply took the mag and put it in with the bolt closed and then pulled it back and pushed the mag in... it worked and that shows me it can be loaded that way

All my guns are stored safely in a gun safe and also trigger locked. Ammo is stored secure and away... I don't have to justify owning an HD gun to you or anyone

There you go folks, plinker assumes I was loading live ammo and gets all childish & when I call him on it then takes exception to my scary shotgun picture and asks "Why do you own a HD shotgun with a loaded shell caddie?" and wonders why I want to fast load an SKS...

This is the kind of guy that thinks the 5 round limits is just fine, this is the kind of guy that thinks Home Defence shotguns are scary, this is the type of guy you see looking down their nose at you when you bring your black rifle out at the range

These kind of guys piss me off more than antis because they own guns and ought to know better

Oh and classy guy who slings #### and then runs to ignore when he gets called on it

class act

Anyway good thread for the most part, thanks for the spring links they're interesting and I think I'll leave my mags unloaded and bolts closed from now on just for good measure

You can leave mags loaded without issue. They are designed to work that way. Besides, 5 rounds in a 20 round mag would have next to no effect.

Pre-loaded magazine ... pop it in short notice?

If your magazine is loaded it should be stored separately from the rifle and locked at home. Which is why I don't see how there will be any popping in short notice.

At the range 5 round magazine is a joke. I don't know how much they cost nowadays, 30? 40? 50? Well 12 stripper clips will cost you 9 bucks and they hold 10 rounds and will provide you with much faster reload times.

And did I also see a loaded "home defense" shotgun? You've got to be kidding right? You don't have the right to property, you should know this as a Canadian and you almost have no right to self defense with a fire arm unless you can prove in a court of law that was your only way of survival. And trust me, you most likely won't and if you do they will surely take away your PAL and subsequently your fire arms. I strongly urge you to take your time and read this, or maybe even look further into it before even thinking about home defense as we don't live in the US:

Back to the topic, do not store any fire arms or magazines with the spring under tension. This is clearly stated in any fire arms manual and is a given with any military or police force.

"...there actually is an advantage..." No there isn't.
"...Never store a rifle with the spring under compression..." Nonsense. Springs do not, I say again, do not lose temper from being compressed. Ever think about your car springs losing "stiffness"? They're under tension all the time and asre constantly compressed. Geezuz.

Car springs do lose their stiffness, thats why you can see older cars were the suspension is sagging and they bottom out easier, Ask any auto shop how many strut assemblies they replace.
I had an old truck years ago were the leaf springs were arced the wrong way after a lot of wear.

As I said before in this thread I store my firearms in a safe and also trigger locked ... the thing about Zombies was tongue in cheek. You could see the shotgun loaded? really so I put some rounds on the sidesaddle for a picture and its loaded, you better look up the definition for loaded again, nothing was in the tube and nothing was in the chamber.

I've never had a firearm with a live round in my house, the guns are for target shooting and fun. My wife and I take them way out in the bush to shoot... BUT yes I would defend my family if I had to

Some of you really should relax a bit and don't assume so much

Really I was wondering about springs and not anyone assumptions

You know what, I don't need to look up any sort of definition that is being discussed here; but it seems like you could benefit a whole lot from an attitude adjustment with regards to fire arms or perhaps a tonal adjustment with regards to writing about importan matters.

I apologize, sometimes I forget that I'm speaking to civilian gun owners.

Good day.

Yeah you always have to be serious in the world, no room for levity

Sometimes I forget about FUDDS

Good day to you too
