Many moons ago I had a chance to play with a m1carbine that was commercially converted to pump action AND in 45 acp.....Being a long time ago,who remembers who converted them...

The pump M1 carbine was one way to keep it non restricted when Trudeau had them classified restricted .
Another way was to turn them into a bolt action repeater .
Both involved welding up the gas piston .
Many were converted by the owner .
The RCMP had a spec sheet on how to convert them from semi auto to repeater

This was a version by Dan Cotterman...........employs a wrap-around slide handle operating through a slot cut in the forearm of the stock. A screw plug was substituted for the piston and the nut.

"...Both involved welding up the gas piston..." No need to weld. Just replace the gas piston with a solid plug. Mind you, that had to be made by a good machinist. So did the barrel extension we could use in those days. Had to be rifled, but it wasn't a big deal.
"...let's not see another turd..." Law of averages will get us. Interesting to note that all the really seriously disturbed PM's have been Socialist F**ks. Mac-King for example. Trudeau the Elder was justy a card carrying communist.

Yes the gas port had to be welded so it could not be converted back to semi auto . I had the form from the RCMP & it had to be welded . This was around 1979

Sorry if I'm not up to speed here, but I've been considering an M1 carbine. Are the they all restricted regardless of barrel length like they do with the AR15???

Cool pic, right from the Carbine Handbook by Paul Wahl. I did one up just like it in '81 and shortly after turned it into a spring operated bolt action. The "slap bolt" was quicker and less cumbersome to use plus it looked like a regular carbine.

Now here's the bad part, thanks to Turdeau's policy. That particular rifle was an early Winchester with a drift for windage notch rear sight. Oh...the shame of it!:(

"...around 1979..." In those days, you didn't need to do anything but extend the barrel. The extension had to be rifled, so a hunk of .303 barrel worked well.
"...regardless of barrel length like they do with the AR15???..." Nope. Barrel length only. The 18.5" rule was aimed at the Carbine. A few U.S. companies, Iver Johnson being one, made 19" barrels, but most just ignored the Canadian market like they do now. Carbines are great fun, but you can't shoot 'em anywhere but a range(if you can get the ATT) unless you find one with the longer barrel.
