308 or 30-06?

Both your choices are wrong , .270 is better.

Most 308 are 1 in 12 twist vs1 in 10 30 06. So the 30 06 will shoot bullets heavier than 180. I like 30 06 although i dont shoot heavy bullets. You dont need compressed loads and you can make powder measure loads not too high pressure where you might want to weigh equal 308 loads

If you can't do it with a 308 then a 30-06 isn't going to cut it either, there is just not that much difference that I can tell.
Hardcore fans will flame me, but really...it's like comparing a 303 Savage to a 30-30 or a 6mm rem to a 243. They are comparable on many levels.

I like .308, but when you add moose and elk to the menu, I would rather have the little extra power of .30-06 when launching heavy projectiles.

If you're going to shoot it a lot on the range, then .308 is a better choice. Better pricing/availability for surplus ammunition.

Looking at buying a bolt action rifle and cant decide between the 30-06 or 308. The rifle will mostly be used for hunting deer, black bear and moose. I am also planning trips for caribou and elk. During the off season I also plane on taking the rifle to the range for some occasional informal target practice, this is one of the resones I have been leaning twords the 308. As I have herd it has less recoil very accurate and cheaper to shoot then the 30-06. I don't reload ammo but am wondering would I be giving up a lot of performance for hunting with the 308? Would I be better served with the 30-06 for my needs?

No, you would not be giving up a lot of performance if you choose the .308 and yes you would be better served with the .30-06 but again, not a lot.

If they are the same, then why do blondes have more fun??? And since the saying is "racy blonde" then I suppose the .30/06 is the blonde... So we have a Ginger vs Mary-Anne sort of dilemma (yes, I know Ginger was a redhead... You get the point)... And on that issue, I always go with Mary-Anne... She's cute enough, annd will be there when you need her... And so again, I'll take the .308.
