hey guys,
ive got a 700 AAC-SD in 308 and i want to throw on a muzzle brake. its threaded 5/8x24 (which is one of the reasons i picked this rifle)
i was looking at the NEA muzzle brake and wondering how this style of brake is?
http ://www.theammosource.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14_288_289&products_id=3241

any other suggestions?
i bought this rifle for hunting but after 1 season out with it im tired from lugging it around so im going to bed the stock and put on better glass over the winter and a stock mono-pod then grab something superlightweight for the bush.
thinking of going with a Vortex 4-16 or 6.5-20, i dont need the best glass, just reliable.

ide also like to know what monopod i should get that will clip onto my rear sling swivel.

Look at Sightron S3 series scopes. For around $1000 I think they are the best bang for the buck out there. Looking through my 6-24 back to back with my Nightforce 5.5-22 I can barely tell the difference in clarity, the NF has a slightly wider field of view but color and resolution is pretty much equal. Jerry at Mystic Precision is great to deal with and will ship it out quick.
I don't run brakes on my 308's but if you want a really good one for around $100 call ATRS in Calgary. No more recoil :) They have a website you can check if you prefer that to using the phone.

Good luck

If your plan is to shoot paper , don't get a mono pod , sure they are neat and all but compared to a good rear bag (even a squeeze bag) they fall way short in terms of stability and how quick/ easy they are to adjust for target acquisition

+ 1 on the rear bag. I put an AAC Brakeout on my 700, flash hide and muzzle brake in one, I can't comment on how it works as I haven't shot it yet, but I'll let you know. If you want to lighten it up a bit, check out the MDT LSS chassis. My 308 is strictly target so weight is not an issue. Soon to be dressed in the tac 21, but I lug my 223 rem 700 tactical around after coyotes so I think I'm going with the LSS for that one. After lots of research, a sightron will be sitting on my 308 as well. I also found a Zeiss conquest 6.5-20X50 with target turrets at a reasonable price on the EE, I'm very impressed with the quality in that optic as well. Just wish it was 30 mm tube. I have used a few vortex and though they are not bad, for the same price, my Zeiss kills them in optics clarity.

Ammosource/SFRC is a sponsor and ok to hotlink.

I picked up a PWS Precision Compensator from Questar. Works like a charm.

+3 on the squeeze bag. A CGNer was selling well made ones a little while back that work great. I forget who it was.

I can't see how I could find a monopod to be useful. I think it would be a serious pain in the ass. I only shoot paper/targets out in the field but find a rear squeeze bag hard to beat for speed and accuracy.

As for brakes, I've only shot the ATRS on multiple rifles (3-4? ranging in .308 to 300wm to .338AI) and some crappy cross drilled brake on a Christensen Arms Carbon gun (.30cal projectile, .338 cartridge?). The ATRS brake works 100x better by not only braking the gun, but preventing almost all spray back. The Christensen Arms brake covered you in dirt/gravel/dust every time you shot. If you didn't have eye protection your eyes would get a blast of it as well. Horrible gun. Shooting standing may be ok, but most of my shooting is done prone.

I personally have an ATRS 3 port brake on my .308. I am shooting 208 amax at max loads and feel almost no recoil (comparative to .223 heavy barrel). It works great and I highly recommend it.

i cant find brakes on ATRS website... am i missing something? i see info in the FAQ about their brakes but nothing outside of the builds.

edit..nevermind...got it

Which ATRS brake are we talking here? I'm assuming the AR-10 brake @ 125.00?

same question here... because one of them is their 3 gill brake that they want the whole rilfe so they install it at $350.... sorry im not paying 350 for indexing, and what if i decide i want it off, they say they baically runin the threads.
a set screw probably would be a better idea with indexing crush washers. (which i assume ill need to buy for whatever brake i buy?)

i also found Vais Arms brakes, anyone have experience with them?

Yup, the gill brake is the only brake of theirs I've shot. .308, .300wm, .338AI.

If plans are to shoot prone, I'd highly recommend one that doesn't cause the blowback to raise dust / etc. Thats a serious PITA.

And of course, shooting brakes at ranges sucks for everybody around you. We only shoot out in the field at our own locations and wear the proper ear protection.

Coretac has a brake that just screws on. Once its indexed, you just tighten up a couple allen bolts on the sides and its good to go. It sells for $210.00. As well, Blackrose Tactical sells some decent brakes. I have their 3 Port Heavy Duty brake which sells for around $75.00 and it works like a charm. Only draw back is the excessive noise you get with brakes and that Blackrose doesn't give a crush washer with their brakes. So I had to order a shim kit from Questar. My friend owns the PWS Flash Hiding Comp and it works well at controlling recoil without as much of the noise as just a brake alone. The .308 doesn't really need a brake recoil wise, but its more fun shooting when you can actually see your bullet splash because the rifle stays on target instead of jumping around.

On rifle that people KNOW they want a permanently affixed brake that does NOT come with factory installed threads, our 3 gill brake is the answer.
For factory rifles like the 700 AAC that comes with a threaded barrel in a generic 5/8x28 our AR10 brake is the better option. It employs and comes with a crush washer to facilitate indexing. Indexing IS important due the the port design, if they are not 100% aligned to TDC the exhaust will make the rifle move 1 direction or the other, making repeatable accuracy much more challenging. When properly installed most have found their shooting improves due to the significant recoil reduction of our design.

On our permanently installed 3 gill brake IF someone does not know that they are built onto the barrel and tries to remove threads "can" be damaged.
We can remove them without issue.
Frankly on the 700AAC the AR10 brake is the better option.

PM Skullboy for excellent quality bags that are made in Canada. I picked up a set of 3 (small med and lrg) for I think around 120 bucks. You can tighten straps to adjust firmness and they look sweet in digital camo patterns. JSA Tactical shooting bags is the brand.

thanks ATRS, i was figuring some sort of thread lock, but hadnt realized you machined the brake once installed. i suppose that does save a lot of time of on/off fitting to get it indexed perfectly

BINGO! That's who I bought mine from! Thanks.

I'm also looking for a brake for the same rifle. Has anyone used coretec brakes or grizzly gunworks? Do the more expensive brakes do anything different than the cheaper options?
