Hi guys,

I searched around but couldn't find an answer to these questions..

I just bought a T97 and was curious, is it OK to dry fire this gun? I am assuming yes, but I just wanted to double check.

Also, I heard that I may need to file the feedramp to prevent failures? Is this true?

Thanks

I run a variety of LAR and XCR-L 10 rd mags and surplus 5.56. Not one FTE or FTF. The mag that comes with the T97 has not seen a round yet.

The whole it has no feed ramps is a load of bs look at an ak47 chamber its very simmilar. Its more crappy ammo and mags causing failures than anything.

This ^^^ seems to be very true. The only malfunction in 3-400 rounds so far for me has been ammunition related. The cheap chinese ammo works, but results in malfunctions every now and again.

I really like mine. It is a very fun shooter. I was knocking a 12" steel plate at 100yds the other day consistently using cheap norc ammo, and with a hot barrel.

Enjoy your new rifle!

Normally, dry-firing a center fire gun should not be a significant source of wear and tear (once it is cleared and verified as empty of course!) If you are worried, purchase a set of .223 Snap-Caps from your local gun store.

Regarding the feed ramp, this problem seems to be caused by some brands of magazines seating a bit lower or at a slight angle so that a small portion of the top of the magwell protrudes above the front of the seated magazine and rounds may catch on it. Some guys are filing a 45 degree slope on the top edge of the magwell below the feed ramp to compensate.

Insert an empty mag and check the seating carefully before you start modifying anything. Also, test fire a bunch of rounds. It's easier to just change magazine brands than to start "do it your self gunsmithing" on a new rifle.

A proper seating and fitting magazine will not cause this. I use DH magazines, and they seat fully in, with no mag well surface exposed above the top of the magazine, so the rounds ride over smoothly.

Enjoy your T97!

I've only had one bullet head rammed into the casing out of 300 with chinese ammo and with my crappy grey LAR mags that were loaded to 10, and that one mag doesn't feed right in any gun its in.

I've only had 1 pushed in bullet in 200 rounds and it was round number 2 thru rifle. I had 2 grey Pistol mags coupled together and both fully loaded. It fired the rest of the rounds without incident. I think it was the extra weight pulling down on front of the mag. Since then I just run one 10 round mag full. No failures since then. I think I might very slightly file the feed ramp. I mean what if SHTF I couldn't run 30 round mags!! :) lol
Enjoy your rifle!! It's a ton of fun!

thanks for the replies. i was also curious, is EMEI part of Norinco? I know they seem to be the manufacter. Mechanically, how does this gun differ from a QBZ-95, other than it being semi auto only?

Emei is a manufacturer of civilian firearms. I asked north sylva and they said the full auto guns are made in a different factory. Theres been a few bolt guns come from this factory and theyve been of excellent quality. The real type 95's are made by jianshe arsenal 296. A much better comparison is to the type 97a. They have different trigger groups and are not interchangable other than that the bol, carrier and gas system are the same

Jianshe, and Emei, are part of the same "corporate" entity. Same company. Different brand. Think GM, Chevy, Pontiac etc.

It's got nothing to do with ammo and low quality mags.
It's got nothing to do with the actual feed ramp.
It's the depth that your mags are seating at, as it was built around the norinco mags seating depth.
Adjusting the feed ramp is easier than adjusting the mag seat depth for use with lar or pmags.

So far, my T97 has been flawless. I would not file feed ramps...

As others have said, various mags may be problematic, try several...

Personally, I would like to see a much thinner front post & a rail to allow mounting of a red dot between the front sight & carry handle...

Cheers
Jay

This so true since according to all "The Experts" who spout this drivel that a modern rifle must have M4 feed ramps to work. If this was the case how come the M16A1, M16A2 etc did not require feed ramps? load of BS.
