My Unref SKS Refurbished?

I think I might have mentioned in another posting that I had an unissued SKS.. It was definitely advertised, as an unrefurb and thought to be unissued; sat in storage, unfired since. I don't feel as though I paid a premium for it which is good.

First glance looks original, I noticed signs of what I thought were test firing. After a few months the finish very suddenly began flaking with no use. The first question asked to me when I inquired with a woodworker was if it was recoated. It prompted me to go over the whole rifle. I don't know enough about them but I've done a bit of research now and suddenly some things pop that I'd like to bounce off you all to confirm the likely obvious.

The barrel looks scrubbed, some markings are not clear and the blueing does not match the receiver. The bayonet has shellac on it. The cleaning rod looks painted. The gas tube latch and magazine are early style, it's dated 1954. The number fonts don't match, there are 3 different styles. There is some paint on the butt plate.

Please tell me I'm not just looking for reasons to take it out to the range ;). Seems rebuilt to me. Fire away?
 
Yeah, you have to remain vigilant when buying an SKS. Sometimes "non-refurb" is confused with "non-issued". You can have a refurb that is unissued and some will advertise it as such. It's technically correct, although misleading.

When buying misurps I question the crap out of The seller. If they know nothing of them, I will pass... unless the price is right.

Especially those who advertise as a "silver bolt" SKS. First indication that they know nothing about it.

"The bolt is shinny and it goes bang when you pull the trigger. $200"
 
Are the serial numbers all the same. First clue with mine is the barrel serial number is different. That and the electro penciled numbers all over it. Shoots great so no problem and it was sold as a refurb.
 
I'm pretty sure it was advertised as uneverything, the 3 u's. There could have been a mixup as there was a similarity between the one I wanted and a refurb in the mix.

Where's the barrel serial? Would it be the 4 digit number on the right hand side by the charging handle?
 
If you didn't pay a premium for it, and it looks pretty decent I'd say you did ok. I see a lot of them that are claim to be unissued and un refurbed that clearly are not, at premium prices.
 
I've got an un-issued SKS that people told me to not ever fire. I've got two Lee Enfields that are in original military configuration with matching numbers both worth 3 times the value of that SKS and I fire them all the time. It makes no sense to me to buy a gun a never fire it.

The people who do not fire them are the "investor" :rolleyes: types who horde all the guns, as to sell it later for an inflated price to those who were too late to buy it.

This. In addition, you have to do some research to know the difference. This is in the same category as corrosive ammo being sold as non-corrosive.

You don't have a mint Colt M1861; fire the gun, it's surplus.
 
I have 2 SKS; one clearly refurb with box mark only on the stock and not the rec cover, which is my shooter, and this one as an investment. I don't know why but I would like more, and to fire them all even if they're all the same :redface:

The last one shows remnant of an electro-pencilled number on the barrel under the rear sight base and some sanding. I'm sorta unaware of barrels being serialized but there's some stamped numbers on it too.

Those are refurb's.
 
Ahh, I figured the cat hair'd be the dead giveaway ;) I suppose the seller and I must have missed it until now but I'm kind of relieved in a way that I'll have it out blasting. I don't like just storing it. The bore's mint and it should be a good shooter. Thanks!

That's me! I have a closet of unopened boxed units ranging from 1949 to D's wth a few izzys and Chinese milsurps. The black BBQ paint is the worst part of some refurbs. I sand blasted mine down to the white just to get that stuff off(took off the cat hair too)
