I'm not an appy person.
What the heck does this gizmo do?

I wasn't either till I needed to find something easy for locating some marble along with BC coast
Ihunt was extremely easy to use on my iPad .
Let's say I want to go hunting in a new area someplace I'm not familiar with let's say Dawson Creek
On the map I can simply click on any place I want to go hunting it will not only take away point but also will give me the opening and closure of individual game species for that area plus legal hunting times and the weather.
It is so extremely user-friendly that even I can use it no problem right off the hop HAAHAA

An app we use at work for the i-pad is called GPSKit HD. It is about $16 to download. Works on i-phone and i-pad. More of a navigation aid that anything. We often go onto Google earth and cache an area of the satellite imagery where we will be working onto the i-pad. It will track you in real time and display the route you have taken overlaid on top of satellite imagery. You can save your routes and way points. You can take photos with the i-pad and have them geo-referenced. You can post your pictures here on CGN and then everyone will know exactly where that trophy shot was taken.

I think there is one for android as well
No it will not find your moose for you but by just clicking on where you want to go the WMU will open up the rags for that spot will open up
You get a list of openings enclosures plus special restrictions just for that particular area makes it nice and simple
It will also let you know the weather plus illegal hunting hours for game and waterfall for that particular spot you are looking at
There is about six different types of maps including satellite so you can take a waypoint and then switch between the different types of maps to get a very clear understanding of the terrain you'll be hunting.
Definitely a great tool for exploring new areas for hunting saves spending all that time with the Regs book trying to figure out the next month

Android has Ihunt Calls, looking at it I cant tell if its just calls or if it offers the other features mentioned previously.
Any other handy apps people are using when out in the bush?

so you take a pic, it tags where you are.. so you upload the photo and tell the world where the "honey hole" is? NO THANKS

with GPS KitHD you don't have to tag and geo reference photos if you don't want to, but the app has that capability. I work in forestry and we use it a lot for road inspections, cut block inspections and timber cruising. Great for pinpointing where there are drainage issues (plugged culverts and the like) and getting this info to our road maintenance guys.
IHunt BC sounds interesting. I will have to check it out.

I'm looking to go scouting in a few new locations this year and would like the ability to track and display my route on google maps, will ihunt or any other app do this for me?

Ihunt won't work on Google maps as far as I know but it will track and save waypoints and you have the ability to switch from topical to satellite etc. etc. through the provided maps in the app

For Android:

Fade, great app if you hunt elevated, it detects falls and sends emergency message to a preset person, gives message as well as gps location. Great app if you hunt alone. I took a fall from a roof 2 years ago, could have saved my life.

Shooting hours Gives sunset/rise times based on geographical location, vibrates to indicate sunrise/sunset

For maps, I use Backcountry Navigator, excellent GPS enabled map that allows you to toggle between satellite and topo maps. Trimble Outdoors is a great map too.

Antler Insanity, lock in stands and keep track of them, excellent wind direction indicator too.

Time 2 Hunt, another great sunrise/set calculator, integrates moon phase as well.

I use one on my Android device when we go ATV'ing. Its called 'My Tracks'. It plots your whole trip, gives you distance travelled, speed, max elevation, min elevation, etc, etc. It is a great ap and go to an internet website and google map your route any way you want, topo, satellite, etc. It has a TON of info on it. You can also set markers with a description, print out, again, just a bunch of features. It is sensitive as well, because we travel through bush, etc. and I have it usually in my chest pocket. Sometimes, theres a mud suit over that. And, I have never lost info through rain, fog, etc. Best of all, its FREE. No ads. Give it a try.

GPSKitHD will do what you are looking for. Can display on Google Maps or on Google Earth satellite imagery.

I use Hunting Calendar which I mainly use to get a reference of what they are thinking are better days for wildlife movement, which i believe is most likely based on moon stages.
Sunrise/Sunset so I have a better idea of legal shooting times (30 min after sunset).
ISnipe for estimating bullet drop (after properly sighting in of course).
Turkey Calls, and Ihunt calls for practicing with as we all know we can't use electronic turkey calls in Ontario.
I do have a first aid app and a couple survival apps that can help in case of emergency.
Ifish Ontario to help find more info on lakes/species around me.
A new website I found through twitter is ww w.whattohunt.com[/B] They made u...ve plans to turn this into an app eventually.
