Is Cowboy Action addictive?

Think that after I look in this thread, I always feel like I need to watch the Sons of Katie Elder again...and Mclintok!... and lonesome dove...

Them are all purtty guns!
This year I'll be shooting guns a can't afford my buddy bought a pair of 3rd generation Colts in 45Colt. I'll be sporting'em for Classic Cowboy Categorie, can't wait! :0)

Over the last week I watched a Tom Selleck trilogy, "CrossfreTrail", "Last Stand at Saber River" and "Monte Walsh".
Man! I'll say this, if you've never watched any of these movies, you're missing out I highly recomend'em.

Ill have to look them up,
looking into Sass, has got me digging up my old leather kit from a decade ago in my teens, and gathering all the westerns I can..
Its a pricey sport to get into, but damn is it good lookin!

The matches are fun. Getting dressed up, using silly alias and say funny phrases, not so much.

Hey, to each their own, but I have shot other disciplines, and you could cut the tension and competitiveness in the air with a knife. At the beginning to of my first CAS match, I thought the lines were a bit corny but once I let go and "Spirit of the Game" took over there was no turning back.

I enjoy this type of shooting more than any other for a few reasons; refusing to take yourself seriously relaxes you and you do shoot cooler and better, I have never shot with a safer and more considerate bunch of guys (the competition is of least import, which allows safety to be truly number one), and it is one of a very few sports where the rookie who shoots poorly has the most fun and makes the most new friends.

I get stress at work, I don't need it from my recreation too, but again, that's just me.

Then I would say Cowboy Action Shooting is not for you.
IPSC, PPC IDPA etc. is what you want to take part in.
No hard feelings from us cowboys, gals and Buckaroos. Enjoy the shooting activities of your choice.

Now you'll have to watch Open Range, Silverado, Broken Trail and the Duke's epics and you'll forget all about other forms of shooting. LOL

I'll admit I was hoping it would be addictive. Shot it twice, was bored as hell the whole time. Everyone else seemed to be having fun, but were upset that I took a competitive stance from the get go. Apparently a lot of people just do it so they can play dress up and have cowboyish names.

And your point is? What is the difference between Cowboy dress up and the IPSC Production shooter who must have a Shadow, wear cleated shoes, a double belt with an offset holster or the IDPA SSP shooter with his Etok Vest, M&P PRO/Glock 34, Kydex Holster and running shoes? We all dress for the sport we play and are in it for the fun. Only a handful of shooters in either sport will regularly win competitions of any importance. The rest of us just do it for the fun and friendship we experience.

The Cowboy folks are just more honest and up front about it. Gob bless them.

Cold Lake Kid, you forgot the classic "Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood.

I've never been to an IPSC match where anyone felt dressing up and having cool names was more important than trying to be competitive. Had I known that that was cowboy action was all about in wouldn't have gone. If they are going to be honest, why not call it reenactment instead of competition?

Rob have you seen the top shooters in SASS in action. The competitor types are very competitive and are very good shooters. If the rest want to play and enjoy themselves why not? Cowboy Action Shooting is the largest shooting sport easily in the World so they must be doing something right. I have heard over 90,000 registered shooters. That would be twice as many USPSA and IDPA shooters combined. I have no idea how many IPSC shooters there are in the world but I am damn sure if we added IPSC/USPSA and IDPA combined we would be outgunned by the Cowboys and Cowgirls by a lot. Don't mess with Texas would take on a whole new meaning padna.

HOWDY; You get all kinds. Some just want to shoot odd old guns. Some wish for a day from reality. Some are looking for a friend and social. Others want the rush of adenerlin to go fast and win the pink Caddy. It can be what you make it.
That is kind of why it works for a large number of people. 70 year olds can Win there age category, what a rush!

I would suggest that dressing up and having fun aliases is an added feature to the shooting. Reenactment would mean that a specific event was being recreated, that isn't what we do. We are all competitive shooters, just not all of us at the same levels and that is true of all sports. Cowboy shooters come in all colours of the rainbow, some love shooting old west guns and that is the main reason they shoot CAS, others like the competition aspect more, but I hear all the time about top shooters offering a spare rifle to another shooter that has gear issues, or advise as to how a shooter might be able to shave off a few second by doing things a certain way. Cowboy in general still believe in the "Cowboy Way". That is why we welcome shooters from all over at our matches, I was in San Angelo, Texas, 2 years ago, these Cowboys actually offered to stand at attention if I wanted to sing "O Canada", I was received like a long lost cousin and was offered all manners of help and fire arms so I could play. They refused to let me pay for the ammo I used at their match.
I have not had the pleasure of shooting any other type of shooting sports and I'm sure that they can not be all bad, otherwise no one would bother.
So suffice it to say that I'm a proud Cowboy Action Shooter and my experience since I discovered CAS has been nothing but positive. I encourage everyone to open up your mind and your horizons, you just might discover some real fine individuals and maybe even make a few friends and who knows, you might even find out that shooting some old style guns, dressing like your favorite Cowboy/Girl is just the most fun you've ever had with your clothes on!

I have nothing to say about Cowboy shooting regarding this point.

I will state that you are very wrong in this statement about IPSC. Every piece of apparel and gear on the majority of IPSC shooter's bodies are selected to gain an edge on the competition. It's not about dress up for fun. It is about winning - from the Grandmaster trying to take the ring to the "D" Class shooter chasing a medal. You do not understand our sport - it is two completely different things. (Neither of which is bad)

I apologize for the hijack as I make this correction. Now back to the very nice discussion among the people that enjoy Cowboy shooting, as they do a great job extolling the nice virtues of their hobby...

Christ here I thought I shot IPSC for fun. I bought all my IPSC gear cuz it looked cool no wonder I seldom win. You obviously have never seem me in my IPSC garb, double belt, dropped and offset holster, running shoes and my trusty Model "L" in my holster. I even have shooting glasses and Pro Ears. Sometimes I include an icy stare to complete the look. If I was a little chubbier and had fangs I could easily pass for my friend Slavex I am sure.....well at least until the buzzer went off. I don't wear my hat backwards though, one has to draw the line somewhere.

When I was in school I worked on a dairy farm in Alberta and later drove combines in the fall for a larger rancher/farmer in Southern Alberta. By any reasonable measure I am destined to join John in BC. and the ranks of Cowboy Action. I even have a handle picked out.

Come on Sean some folks just shoot for fun. The sport is just the venue.

Every type of completion you have people that are driven to try to be the best of the bunch. I have seen it in all forms of shooting. Cowboy action is no different except that you do not have to meet power factors.
Instead people download for less recoil and thus they become gamers. Do I care? Not really, I am not there to be #1. I go to have fun and spend some time with a bunch of like minded folks. Is it a bit Hokey? Sure maybe, but so is your shooting sport. 3 gunners with tactical camelbacks and humungous carabineers with tactical zip ties? IPSC I wont even go there in case I severely injure their feelings. You shoot yours, and I will shoot mine.

Christ here I thought I shot IPSC for fun.

There is someone who shoots IPSC for fun? WOW, Seriously, I don't remember that happening much back when. One of the benefits of Cowboy Action shooters being older, is the fact that you can make this a family sport real easily. I have noticed far, far more family participation than other shooting disciplines that I shot earlier in my life. Women like to dress up, face it guys if you don't know that by now, you're in trouble. No it is not as serious for most competitors as it was in our 20's & 30's, most of us don't move as fast either, but then most 20 & 30 year olds don't have the same health concerns as those in their 50's, 60's 70's & 80's. We do have 13 year old in the sport, shooting the US Nationals that can put rounds down range, accurately, exceptionally fast, I'm sure it would surprise most from other disciplines and we have to master 4 firearms, not just 1.
