How is the 6.5x55 a "far better" chambering over the 270? Both are excellent, but I don't see a big gap between them, reloading or not.No debate, I have both love my .270 but my 6.5 55 is a far better caliber. That is if you reload !

You don't need to reload for a 6.5 x 55, just buy some Norma ammo from 100gr, 120gr, 140gr and 156gr for all your shooting needs. Awesome ammo IMO

I agree, it is awesome ammo, but it is also an awesome price at over 4 bucks a round.
That said, the 140 gr partition norma factory round shot very well out of my Tikka.

Over $4 a round? Where did you see that? Norma has always been 15-20% more expensive than comparable North American ammo (Oryx vs. high end Bonded ..etc) and for hunting, I don't mind paying that. But this the first time I hear about over $80 for a box of Norma.
I was quoted 40 bucks a box for Norma ammo. Can reload Lapua mega for less than .75 a round and better ammo.75 bucks before tax - No sale Sports in Calgary - about 3 years ago.
I didn't buy any but got to try some because a buddy gave me a box of Norma Partitions as a gift. It is very nice ammo but too expensive for me.
huh?Maybe its my shooting, but I see a large gap between these (wo calibers. If killing game is all you looking for then your right both work great.
The reality is that there is no significant difference from the 25-06, 260, 6.5 X55 right through to the 30-06, using the correct big game bullets on game up to the smaller eastern moose. They all will kill game with great aplomb when used correctly........beyond that it is all personal preference and these discussions will never end because they are all opinion and zero mitigating facts to prove one is better than another. I would happily take anything based on a X57 case, 284 case, 308 case or 06 case from 25-35 cal and go hunting most places in the world and most places in NA for sure..........in this range my personal choice would be a 280 Rem/284 Win, but would happily hunt with any other one if I could choose my bullet.
There really are only 3 or 4 categories of BG hunting cartridges........there's the old boys for open sights and out to 150 mtrs or so like 30-30, 38-55, 45-70, 32 spl etc......then the next step up which encompasses all the calibers and cartridges I just mentioned, based on the modern beltless high intensity cases. Next one is the high performance belted and beltless magnums that do nothing better than the standard cases until 400+ mtrs are reached then it's a new game and the magnums shine and last but not least are the niche stopping cartridges starting at 40 cal and around 5000 ft/lbs and go up. Given the quality of bullets available to us now, in any given caliber, to say any one cartridge within it's family, is better than another, is pure unsupportable conjecture and opinion.
Also cost does not make any one cartridge/caliber selection better suited to hunting, it just makes it cheaper or more expensive......
I find these threads rife with opinion and BS and somewhat less than entertaining...........JMHO

killing the enjoyment of debate with logic
I couldn't agree more Doug... But having said that, should I feel really silly and redundant for owning all of the .308 case cartridges in two platforms (not to mention 15 or so others)???
