Savage 10TR le/military

Yeah the scope was scooped quickly.
I am assuming you bought that scope new then yes?

Yes :(

I shouldn't complain, brand new in the box for $450 tax-in. I just pulled it off my M14 (which some have told me is overkill, that I should use a smaller scope or that I should be shooting irons anyway). I put a Leupold VX-1 3-9x40mm onto my M14 and will run it this weekend to see if there's a huge difference from the Bushnell. Though the Leupold has less magnification and cost a lot less than the Bushnell, the Leupold is super bright and crystal clear.

I ordered mine from Herron Arms, and at the time, they were offering free shipping. I think the other places were charging $15 for shipping and $25 for another place. Anyway, might be a while before I get mine because a lot of staff are at Shot Show so orders are being processed a bit slower. Waiting totally blows, haha!

Meanwhile, I ordered two different muzzle brakes to try out.

Harry Callahan, haha, you posted here, and you started a new thread about Epps? I feel you though man, unexpected expenses suck the big one and I'm thinking about flipping my Beretta 92FS to raise some funds for something else I've been eyeballing. The only problem is, there are a billion Beretta 92FS on EE, haha!

This one came from Frontier Firearms and it was very well packaged. I was expecting the factory box completely exposed with the postage info on it, but it came wrapped in a cardboard wrapper, with no indication it was a firearm at all. Even the packaging label said Frontier Taxidermy. It was like Christmas, haha!

The rifle itself came wrapped in a plastic bag, and so did all the other components like the removable box magazine, the bolt and a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff.

It's not a bad looking rifle, and it's got a TON of bells and whistles. The only thing I had a bit of a grip with, and to be honest, it's just cosmetic, but I'm not a fan of the AccuStock's profile compared to the HS Precision one that came on my Remington 700 Police. Personal cosmetic preferences aside, you really can't ask for much more considering the incredible price.

I acquired a few items ahead of time, even before the rifle arrived. There's the massive muzzle brake I got off Amazon.com, a Blackhawk bipod, a Bushnell Elite Tactical 5-15x40mm and the Weaver tactical 6-screw rings. I have no idea how well the brake will work as there are no reviews on it's performance. The bipod is has the pivot feature, however the frame of the bipod hits the stock when you tilt it, so I might return it and pick up a Champion one. I'm not ready to spend double for a Harris just yet.

I ordered another brake as well, this three chamber one, with two ports on top. It had about 7 reviews online, all of them more or less good, but I figure I'll go with the over-the-top Titanic brake. My buddy Jay bought this one off me.

Mine's not too bad, the massive handle adds a lot of leverage, making it easier, but definitely not as smooth as my 700. The trigger pull is nice and light, not much take up/creep. I'll see how it performs tomorrow when I take it to the range.

I know the stock is supposed to be a decent one because it's got the aluminum bedding block, it free floats the barrel, and has the uber soft recoil pad, but I just don't like the profile. I like my HS Precision on my 700. Going to flip the stock on EE when my XLR comes in :)

Does the stock flex and touch the barrel with a bipod at all?

The stock is pretty stiff, and it has a bit of flex, but the barrel doesn't touch the stock or the bipod. The bipod on the other hand can pivot and unlike the Champion ones, the Blackhawk one contacts the stock at full tilt. It's not like I'll be shooting from positions where I'll go full tilt, but it just bothers me so I'm going to return it and get a Champion one.

Can you easily pinch the barrel and stock together and make them touch?

^ thanks. last question is the action slick or crappy. awndre hates it

Well, my opinion probably doesn't mean a whole lot because I'm quite a noob when it comes to shooting, let alone precision rifles. To me, it feels ok. It feels smooth, doesn't get caught up anywhere. I would almost describe mine as pretty slick. My 700 feels as if it were more solid, as if more heavy duty in a way, but that's in no way saying the Savage is substandard. The Savage action certainly is easy to work because of the massive bolt handle, and it takes some getting used to when I go back to my 700.

Hope that helps.

Mmmm...I wouldn't say easy, but yeah, you can definitely pinch them together and make them touch. It does seem like it has more flex than the HS Precision stock on my 700, but then again, I can also pinch them together and make them touch in the Remington as well. The 700P's stock is fiberglass right? The accustock feels more plasticy. The palm swell is tiny compared to the HS Precision one. I could get used to it I suppose, but I prefer the one on my 700. Doesn't matter though, losing the Accustock anyways.

Nice gun, and I am a fan of Savage rifles but they need to do something about those cheapo looking stocks. I have about 5 of them in my basement and it seems every model has the same crappy piece of plastic. Good news is the rifle will shoot, every one I have owned shot well enough to satisfy.

Mine showed up today, immediately began fondling it after getting home from work. So far I'm really liking it, the stock I could take it or leave it. Not sure if I will leave it as it is or get something different. Other than that, the action feels very nice, trigger is great, very clean and crisp. Haven't noticed any blemishes or anything on it. Definitely happy with the purchase.

Here's the obligatory pic. Had a bipod and a millet 6-25x56 laying around so tossed it on there, would like to eventually put a vortex on instead.

Cool. Congrats. I'm still waiting to see some CGNers post some range results.

I got a chance to take the 10TR out for a test drive today, up at PCDHFC. Not sure if the temperature is important, but it was probably hovering around -1 or so. The rifle is pretty much as is out of the box except with the addition of a Blackhawk pivot bipod, GRG Magnum Muzzle Brake I got off Amazon.com.

Now the following findings are from a noob shooter, and on top of that, a noob to bolt action rifles and precision shooting. I barely knew what MOA meant until just two weeks ago. I'm sure some of you more advanced and experienced shooters could get better results, but these are my results:

First up is the Nosler Custom 168gr. I didn't have the confidence to use the tiny rifle target sheets so I started off with the larger pistol target sheets.:

http://1.bp.########.com/-quUGE944JIk/UvBvUx3NtNI/AAAAAAAATJA/VYqfiggGA1Y/s1600/P1311035.JPG

http://3.bp.########.com/-UGB94QQZRnE/UvA9iZ8CDyI/AAAAAAAATHU/6L_nkAO_su8/s1600/DSCN4853.JPG

At 100 meters, I got a group at 2.66 inches. I had a feeling that one on the right was a flyer so I let off so I tried another group:

http://3.bp.########.com/-PKFyMHZeGMs/UvA9iCGPckI/AAAAAAAATHQ/WEMDuekH1Cg/s1600/DSCN4854.JPG

My second group was a lot tighter at 1 inch.

http://2.bp.########.com/--awbYvEQcJc/UvA9haYLvgI/AAAAAAAATHI/sOhkBLwGHEg/s1600/DSCN4855.JPG

I tried the Nosler out to 200 meters and shot three 3-round groups, measuring 1.78in, 1.59in, and 1.7in. This left me with a pretty good feeling.

Next up is the Remington Premier Match 175gr Match King BTHP. Boy, that's a mouthful.

http://2.bp.########.com/-lkILvMYDoUY/UvBvVOD3TsI/AAAAAAAATJE/euZ3mpm6J8g/s1600/P1311036.JPG

http://1.bp.########.com/-6gaHk-sJjnU/UvA9kwpy5II/AAAAAAAATHc/aHVBxX7AXhs/s1600/DSCN4856.JPG

At 100 meters, it wasn't so hot with a 1.9in grouping. Again, this is probably the result of user error (me).

http://1.bp.########.com/-2q-a0mIauu4/UvA9nbhdMZI/AAAAAAAATHk/LB8O4UZVrEM/s1600/DSCN4857.JPG

I did three more 3-round groups and the results were 1.66in, 2.12in, and 2.19in. they were all over the place, but maybe I was rushing, maybe I pulled a few shots, who knows.

http://4.bp.########.com/-Z8e0dKXopSQ/UvA9pkfblnI/AAAAAAAATHs/9UfQJvaYa_k/s1600/DSCN4858.JPG

When I took the Remington Match Kings out to 200 meters, I was really wondering what I was doing wrong, but I ended up shooting two 3-round groups getting 4.18in and 3.5in.

That was pretty much all of the Nosler and Remington ammo I had with me today, so I decided to test out the Federal Premium 168gr Sierra Match King BTHP Gold Medal Match that I had left over from testing out my 700p. It didn't do that great in the Remington, so I figure I might as well blast away a 5 round group and see how it did in the Savage.

http://2.bp.########.com/-aDvVBtD3VAM/Us4ki_UrTvI/AAAAAAAASvY/6xHFaJy2w90/s1600/DSCN4688.JPG

http://4.bp.########.com/-zY-I9V53COE/UvA9tGIOm1I/AAAAAAAATH0/jPN79kqkevk/s1600/DSCN4859.JPG

The results were surprising to me, but then I thought back to all the reviews saying how awesome these were and the surprise faded away. 5 rounds in a 1.7in group at 200 meters.

Next up were some left over Hornady Match 168gr BTHP. These did okay in my 700p, but I didn't have time to test them out extensively so I'll have to get another box to run through the Remington again.

http://1.bp.########.com/-f6tx1c_jmu8/Us4ki0WMebI/AAAAAAAASvU/VliVrEMdYFI/s1600/DSCN4685.JPG

http://1.bp.########.com/-XXsdv1PHz74/UvA9ubVcqdI/AAAAAAAATH8/gmt8BtVVfvc/s1600/DSCN4860.JPG

I shot three rounds and got them in a 1.9in group, and then decided to blat off the 5 rounds I had left. 1.65in. I was in awe.

I also had my 700p with me and I blatted off a few rounds at the 200m gong and nailed it easily. I also took a shot at the gong with my Savage, unfortunately, all I had left were 3 rounds of Federal blue box and I had no idea what the hold over would be in the Savage because I hadn't shot any through it yet. I wanted to film the Savage in action along with the GRG muzzle brake so here it is:

I completely missed the gong on the last two rounds, but oh well, I'm positive I can nail it with Nosler, Hornady or SMKs. Better luck next time I guess.

Anyways, remember, I'm a crap shot, I'm still learning, and this was my second trip to the range with a bolt gun, so you more experienced guys will definitely be able to produce some better results. Go easy on me.

Thanks for the review. Nice shooting. Subtract 0.308" (bullet diameter) from your group measurements for your final group size. Congrats, you're shooting sub-MOA (0.692" MOA) with an out of the box rifle using factory ammo. Things can only get better (and cheaper) with tweaked handloads. :)

I'm no pro F-class shooter so take my advice with a grain of salt. A few things that could cause stray shots could be possible flex in the stock making contact with the barrel. You can try and pre-load your bipod or shoot off a rest closer to the middle of the rifle. The more costly remedy would be to bed the stock or upgrade it to a higher quality one. Rifle shake caused by unsteady shoulder anchor. Try using a squeeze bag (there's a CNGer, skullboy ??, who sells great ones for around $30) under your buttstock to adjust the alignment. Improper comb/cheek rest height on rifle stock in comparison to your scope height (in this case, your scope is mounted pretty high above the bore) could make for a bad cheek (or chin) anchor point to help index your setup. Look at installing an adjustable cheek rest like a Tac Pro or on the strap-on ones so you can get a proper cheek weld. No option to adjust for cant. Look at mounting a bubble level to your scope making sure that it is square to your reticle. Adjustment for parallax. Check your focus/parallax by moving your head side to side or up and down and check if the crosshair is floating around the area of the target. If so, adjust it so that the crosshair is fixed. Don't always rely on the markings on the parallax dial.

I could be talking out of my arse so I'm sure the seasoned long range shooters would correct me. :)

I was wondering...

what is to say that a LEO or Military doesn't buy a few of these rifles and sells them to civilians.

are there any regulations against this?
