Mini Mags vs. Velocitor vs. Federal Bulk. Price difference worth it?

I was just wondering what other peoples thoughts were on rimfire ammo to feed their semi-autos. This is not a discussion for a precision rig.

I usually run Federal Bulk through my 10/22 and Mk III and it works pretty well. I have put about 1500 rounds of Federal through my Mk III and only had a handful of failures (more in my 10/22). In bulk pack ammo it is kind of expected that 1 or 2 rounds per box will be duds or have some problem. With CCI i am sure that number goes down quite a bit and maybe even more with something like Velocitors. I mean if it was life or death i would shell out the extra for the higher end stuff, but for day to day shooting is it worth it to upgrade from bulk --> Mini Mags or even Velocitors? or something else? I broke down the numbers below.

Mini Mags 100 @ $7.99 = ~ 8 cents each
Velocitor 50 @ $6.99 = ~14cents each
Federal Bulk 525@ $21.00= 4 cents each

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Any other good cheap ammo that you can suggest?

I think i will probably just stick with the Federal Bulk and keep a few boxes of Mini Mags in reserve unless i can find something close in price to the federal that performs as well or better.

I use Blazers for plinking, Fed bulk for plinking in the GSG mag and Velocitors for hunting. The Velocitors have awesome accuracy, expansion and weight retention but while they're great, no sense breaking the bank. (The whole reason we got 22's) Check out DocTacDad and tnoutdoors9 on YouTube and see what they have to say about Velocitors which might change your mind.

But for the cheap I used the waxed 500 round bricks of blazers made by CCI. Watch for the Federal made Blazers which aren't as good (from what I read).

22LR firearms are very finicky firearms, try them all.

Go to Reliable, ISG, ISS, got a box of 50 of each, tried them all out.

GSG1911 likes Win Expert
SR22 likes Win 333/555
CZ 455 like Win Wildcats.

All like Mini Mags, OK with CCI Blazer.

Cci Blazers at $20 for 500 for plinking in all my 22's and I have a lot of them. For hunting its mini mag hp or subsonic hp. For target been really fond of eley team. Thats the only 22 ammo I have on hand. Works really good in all my 22's so thats all I ask. Got really tired of the crap accuracy and shoddy quality of bulk ammo.

For every day shooting and fun plinking ; use the 22 lr ammo that is the cheapest with the least misfires . For precision target shooting and hunting , you may want to up grade to the ammo that offers the most dependable and precise results...... I personally use bulk 22 lr for all my shooting in my semi and bolt action rimfires ; and have had very few problems....

Blazers for high end plinking and thunderduds for everyday stuff. My t bolt likes both but blazers are cleaner. Not that I clean it much though

Fed bulk are just OK accuracy in my 22, mini mags are pinpoint accurate. For the $15-20 more per 500 I think its worth it when shooting at 100+ yard paper or gophers. I only shoot HP at moving targets. Blazers are a little more dirty than fed bulk in my rifle, but they are also a little more accurate. Try lots and decide for yourself.

Blazer and Fed 525 Bulk are technically even in accuracy and reliability. Fed 525 is cleaner being plated. Mini-mag is more consistent overall. Win M22 is also good. Win 555/525/333 is not bad when I can't find any Fed Bulk or Blazer. Win Wildcat is the worst. These are based on my factual use: Rem 597HB; GSG 1911; Browning Buckmark Contour 5.25.

I used to shoot Fed 525 packs a lot when I had more gophers to shoot at and got to do more plinking however my 10/22T never reliably cycled a full magazine of them IIRC. Of course your 22 may be completely different and as has been said you really gotta try a few types to see. I definitely find Mini Mags worthwhile when shooting critters but otherwise I have two cases +/- of American Eagle 38grHP's for plinking and fun shooting because I was able to get them for $120 or so for 4000rnds.

I snapped this pic last spring when I did a trial of various brands in my 10/22. The first two groups on top partially covered by the CCI boxes where from my .204Ruger.

They may just be .22's, but...
If you're looking for accuracy you must consider your barrel's twist rate, the bullet's weight and as I've noticed... The velocity of the bullet.
Those mini mags shoot like crap out of one of my .22's... They're just too fast.
Ammo in the 1200fps range gives me dime sized groups at 50yrds.
The mini mags.... shots are all over the platz..lol

By a 50 or 100 round box of each, and spend some time at the range grouping. You'll figure out quickly what your rifle likes best. Every barrel (even two same make/model) has its own personality.

I specifically keep a box full of random boxes of .22 for just that reason.

Personally find that the Federal 525s work better than the Blazer with my semi's. For my .22 conversion kit the Federal Automatch has worked the best bar none, been trying to find more of that in Calgary.

my old Norinco bolt action liked the 333/555 and Federal bulk. The Cz452 V likes Mini mags so far. Its definitely less accurate with the 555 by quite a bit. penny size groups grow to quarter size with the Winchester bulk, Remington bulk. And better but still inferior with the Federal.

Tried most of them and found the mini mag works really well in both my GSG 1911 and Moss 715t as does the American Eagle. Velocitor also worked well but wasn't any better than the mini mag and cost more.

Federal has worked fine for me. The mini-mags are a little better. I stay the hell away from Remington ammo though.

I get really good, consistent results with CCI Mini Mags and it's all I really stockpile. I know it will work consistently well in whatever .22 I happen to be using, whether it's mine or a something I borrowed for the day.

My "bane" ammo is Winchester. I've yet to meet a box of Super X that didn't want to spray in random directions out of the end of the barrel. And yet some people swear by it, and by all accounts, get really good results from it.

Sorry, I should clarify that a bit... Mini-Mags for "general use" - I stockpile CCI SHP (which claims over 1600FPS) for my CZ Lux. It's too hot for my other .22s, but the CZ really likes it, and get really nice results even out to 100yards with it. And the whallop - I call them anti gopher grenades. Wish that ammo ran well in my other .22s, but it doesn't.

This shows my first five shot grouping at 50 yards, with a slight variable wind NE to SW (according to the grass I threw in the air) *****This was done back in September****

These were with CCI minimags. My thumb is a little smaller than a quarter. I know it's not shot on top of shot, but hell, I think it's pretty good!

I was shooting with my ISSC MK 22.
