Could you actually shoot skeet with a short barrel?

I'm looking to purchase a good all-around shotgun and skeet shooting is also on my list of things to do with it. The Dominion Arms Grizzly with 12.5" barrel is at the top of my list because of all the glowing reviews I've read about it and the fact that it's compact for carrying through the bush in bear country.

Can you actually shoot skeet with that 12.5" barrel? Also, since this is my first shotgun, what would be better for it: ghost ring sights or a bead?

Yes it's totally possible. Bead is definitely preferred.

The problem will be its difficult to get a smooth swing with a short barrel when trying to to lead birds.
 
Yes, you can. Although it's far from ideal.
Shot my friends 14" pump for fun, still scored well.
I used to compete with an 18" pump and a 20" Coach Gun. Anything is possible with enough practice.

Ghost ring sights are no good for skeet, get a bead.

If you want a reasonable all around shotgun, get a 20" pump gun from a good manufacturer.

As someone said above you've got to hit them close. The pattern opens up so fast as the range increases that you get voids where your missing with perfect shots.
 
LMAO I did it with my 1300 Defender also. Got to nail them right out of the launcher bwahahahahaha. I found it was more accurate to just shoot the box of them while it was sitting on the ground. Or beat it with a bat.

Assuming interchangeable chokes, could you get a reasonable pattern out of a very short shotgun to reasonable distances? Would swing be the only considerations to take with the length then?
 
Good choice, I have that same shotgun tons of fun, only problem is around 100 rounds shot in a row the mag (if you get mag fed) gets sticky and does not allow the shells to slide up easy. You must take it all apart and clean it time consuming but a hell of a fun gun.

I have shot skeet with this gun multiple times, although it is harder to accurately hit targets its a hell of a lot more fun and bad ass looking when you compare to the long barrel shotguns you typically see.
 
What about just getting an extra barrel? It makes the gun a heck of a lot closer to a 'do it all'. I have an 870 with a 28" vent rib, pop it off, toss on the 18" and a two round mag extension and it's ready for fun or a bush walk.
 
A cylinder choke with #9 or #8 shot will give you enough pattern density to break standard targets consistently out to the 25-30 yard mark...so you don't need to shoot all that fast! If you want a good all-round shotgun then forget about the DA Grizzly and get one of the Rem 870 Express, Win SXP or Moss 500 combo packages. You'll have a long barrel better suited to shooting clays and a short one for carrying in the bush...not to mention you'll have a much better quality gun!
 
Do it all the time with a 14" 12 gauge. I just use the front sight as a giant bead and it works just fine.
I find I have the best luck with a #6 or #7 load.
 
I've been thinking about bringing out my 8.5 grizzly for some clays. It will likely be terrible but tons of fun. The few times I've shot target loads with it, the shot spreads extremely fast. Covers an entire legal sized paper target in just a few yards.
 
I had great results with a 13" backpacker single shot. It doesn't work all the time but fun when it does.

Tried with 18" no choke wing master with metal top folding stock and hit 20/25, also folded the stock and shot one handed and got a few. With any gun, practice is key
 
A 12.5" shotgun is a toy and nothing more. That's no reason not to shoot skeet with it though. Shooting is supposed to be fun. Can't imagine anything that'd be as much fun as skeet shooting with a toy shotgun. Even though you'd very likely hit nothing. Like Suputin says, the regular shooters would be horrified. Stodgy bunch, so they are.
