Are rifle prices going up?

Just this morning I received the good news that my RPAL has been issued and I should have it in my hands in approx 10 days!

For the last 2-3 months I have been looking around at hunting rifles and scopes and have noticed that prices seem to have increased a decent amount over this time. The increase hasn't been on everything but some of the items I was comparing. I was wondering is this more to due with the US dollar and demand increases or due to Christmas sales? Is there a time of the year that prices are generally the best?

I've been looking at the ruger American and found that on some sites the prices has increased $100! Just the other day I had a person tell me they bough one for $299!

Anyone know of any deals currently been offered on the ruger American?

Partly it will be due to the drop in the Canadian dollar, partly it will be due to availability.

Prices are cheapest as soon as the dealer gets their shipment, it's only a slow increase from there.

Also, if you see something that you want, contact the seller and they are generally willing to hold on to it until you get your license and can take possession. No sense missing any deals, as what goes out of stock tomorrow might not get replaced until summer 2015.
 
Sure they are going up. Everything is going up in price except salaries. Those tend to stay same or even go down in some cases.

I would have guessed that prices would be the highest when they first receive new stock. When do stores usually receive their new shipments? Would it be soon as the show was just happened in Las Vegas?

First time on the EE? lol. Prices will always be set by the market. High demand, scarce supply, union production wages, high importation costs, shipping, weak dollar, scrambling paranoid Yanks, scooping up every semi-auto they can... these things all drive up prices.
 
yes, it appears that everything went up over the last month or so. I too just missed out while waiting on my PAL. All the more reason to buy more (before it goes up in price again honey...)
 
Of course ... our dollar has dropped about 10% in value against the US dollar in the last nine months. As dealers replace their inventory with new product it will be at least 10% higher than the identical product they bought a year ago.
 
U will notice even current invetories go up in price but when prices are slated for decrease u always have to wait till alllllll old stock is gone. its the way it is Remeber they are not your friend they want to make money and will do at any point that they can
 
Is there a time of year that in general is the best time to purchase a firearm? Ie. When new stock arrives and they want to blow out last years left over stock? Beginning of hunting season or end of the season?

^XMas one day sale is always the best time to buy firearm. Reliable, ISG, ISS all have Dec sales, just 10 more months.
 
dealer price increases every spring, some rifles I have bought have seen a steady 10-12% increase every year from the manufacturer, better return on my money than putting it in the bank

Prices usually increase in each new product year... some times more than others... due to our dollar, but even more, due to demand guns are taking a huge jump this year. Lebarons jacked the price on Ruger rifles by $100 (give or take) across the board.

As far as when to buy... you buy when you find the right gun for you... you can shop around but waiting a year to get it makes no sense since the upfront cost of the gun is the cheapest thing about shooting.
 
Most manufacturers I have dealt with will announce increases in Nov for effective Jan 1, that is why you are seeing the increases now more than during the year, plus our diminishing Can dollar = significant increases in Jan, Feb, and Mar depending on new stock arrivals. A lot of retailers will also unethically increase old stock prices at the same time, ignoring actual cost and margins, rationalizing that "it's going to cost "X" to replace it so I have to jack it up". I have gone "round and round" with the LGS about this, three different price tags on the same box of bullets. My position is they must sell it for the lowest marked price, they tell me to go elsewhere or pay the highest tagged price. They don't even attempt to hide it by over-tagging.

Businesses are always looking to improve their profitability so they are always going to be thinking about trying to get the most they can for their product. Just as all their suppliers (including employees supplying labour) will always want more when it comes time to negotiate new contracts. When they find a way to cut costs, the savings are usually applied to improving profit. Only if the saving is relatively large will they consider "investing" it in passing on the lower cost to customers in hope of increasing sales volume to get more profit.

Asking price isn't always selling price. Be polite when you make an offer or enquiry and it won't hurt to try. Big box stores won't have the flexibility that small shops and private sellers have. For those small shops where you are more likely to be dealing with the owner (or with staff closer to the owner) it is often easier for them to throw in an accessory or some ammo to sweeten the deal than it is to drop the price on a gun.
 
just bought an american yesterday myself., still same price as usual, and ruger prices did go up at the recent shot show in vegas, didnt seem to want to give any deals this year to shops
if buddy got one for 299 that was awesome price if cdn

Nice! the cheapest I have found is $399 currently, did you find it anywhere cheaper than that?
 
no i havent seen them for less,even 399 is cheeper. its on average $439.00 retail. if that person got one for 299 that told you then they got it for less than shops buying cost. i work at a shop and know wholesale costs and thats a stoopid deal. waaay less than i paid even with my staff discount. buy em all and resell at almost double mark up....lol
