Well I want to into the precision game.
But just want to get my feet wet before I jump right in, so budget 1000-1500 rifle and scope.
I've Been watching reviews and reviews and still can't make up my mind. So I'm looking for honest advice.
The 2 entry level rifles I'm looking at are the savage model 10tr and the Remington model 700 sps tactical.
Scopes on the other hand, have been looking into vortex. Looks like they have the best bang for buck.
But I'm open to all suggestions on any other rifles and scopes, so please any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks nemo

Are you buying new or used also are you target or hunting mostly one more thing are you interested in distance or lower light applications cheers

New and target.... I know new I'm looking more like 2g but with the savage and the sightron might come close after rings and base.

Hi

I have three (3) sightron. Two(2) FF and one (1) SF (Second Focal).

I like them. One is on my 6.5x47 Lapua for F-Class shooting.

The other 2 are one on a savage 110BA - 300 WinMag and one on a Remington 700 with muzzle break and Accuracy International stock for Long Range Target shooting.

You can buy them with confidence me no problem.

On my AI AX-50 I have a Hensoldt 6-24x72, a RSA Hensoldt and a GG&G bi-pod. This beauty is only for EXTREME Zombie Targets. Zombies must be taken care of with the top of the top.

I forgot, Savage and Remignton are excellent choices. Remington 700 has a lot of accessories on the market and you can upgrade everything.

Have a Nice Zombie Day

I have a Savage Precision Carbine in 308 and a Sightron SIII 16x42 MD scope that works very well at long range. The fixed power scopes are considerably less expensive than variables and generally offer better image quality because the light goes through fewer bits of glass.

What distances are you shooting at?

Thanks good to hear!
I'll have to compare hirsch and mystics pricing.

After having both, I would strongly suggest savage, maybe even the axis and switch out the scope for a fixed 10 power with mildots. This will get you in to precision for under 700$ maybe? Good enough to help you figure out what you are looking for in a precision rig <- Just my opinion though. I recommend savages to everyone though, since my first savage was way nicer to shoot than my first remington.

With the PC I haven't gone past 700 yds because I am using 125gr bullets. However I have used this kind of scope setup at a mile to 2000 yds and it works fine. The problem with the high power variables is the visible shake and awful mirage that high magnification brings.

This is the view through a 16x scope at just under a mile (1700 yds). Note the fence posts are clearly visible and they are only 4" wide.

It is a loooong farging way out there!

wow great pics suputin .... wish i had that kind of land. Is it high power scopes in general or just the sightron that cause a mirage?

Vortex is wicked, I have a diamondback 4x12 with dead hold Moa bdc reticle mounted on my browning x bolt stalker chambered in .308 you should definitely check them out, go from shooting 100 yards to 300 with just aiming at a different line on the reticle, glass is clear as can be and no question lifetime warranty plus I got a wicked deal on it locally. For sure check them out

if youre going vortex, just get the PST in FFP.. all of the features, comparable glass, better turrets, the same warranty, and less than half the price of a Mk4 Leupold

Having owned both a Rem 700 SPS Tact and the Savage 10TR, I would opt for the Savage for sure. The Savage has the accu-stock and accu-trigger. The Rem has the Houge overmoulded stock which was a dream to grip and keep in your hands, it was floppy, and felt incredibly weak. The Rem just felt a bit more lower quality compared to the Savage.

If you are looking for a Savage 10TR, there are a few on the EE right now.

All high magnification optics produce this problem. High magnification compresses a large amount of "air" which makes the mirage much more visible. High magnification also makes the rifle shake more visible. I have used up to 32x in the field and at long ranges it is awful. The image is dark and muddy while the mirage swirls and distorts the image and the crosshairs shake and move uncontrollably.

From my experience nothing more than about 20x is worthwhile using in the field at long ranges. Personally I like the 16x because I can still use it down to about 100 yds. Looking through the same magnification all the time I get used to how big certain object appear and can make a decent range estimation just from looking at the target. This is not possible with a variable.

The Savage Accutrigger as found on the PC is excellent. Much better than the ####e OEM Rem trigger. Lots of people, who I can only assume are used to ####e triggers, feel the PC's accutrigger is too light but I think it is excellent. It almost feels on par with the Timney triggers I have in a few Remingtons. Once you get used to a good trigger it is impossible to go back.
