Well I'm going to give turkey hunting a try this spring. Have turkeys at in-laws farm. Have all my gear accept a call. Does anyone have any suggestions. Been thinking about Quaker Boy Turkey Thug Lil Big Time Box call,however I would like a call that is good in wet conditions and low maintenance.
 
I have an inexpensive box call that works well. It has a resin coating on its edges which works fine when wet and requires no real maintenance. Like any call though, one is never enough ;)
 
I have been hunting turkey since they opened in Ontario. I've been using the Quaker Boy box call from the start and this puppy gets response calls from Jakes/Toms like crazy... and brings them a-runn'n to the decoys. You can't beat a box call. A bit more movement but worth the results.
 
I'm also a fan of box calls...way more versatile IMHO than any push-button call.

You should also get yourself a couple of in-the-mouth diaphragm calls. Not only do they work well and require almost no motion, but they're fun to use...you can practice with them at work and drive your co-workers insane!
 
push button for beginners for sure, easy and effective. Saw one called a hatchet that was one handed water proof spring loaded box call and sounds good too !
 
I have been chasing these birds for going on 18 years now and would not trade it for any other hunt and I am hardcore whitetail hunter so that should say something. Any call that makes the right sound will work but remember these birds have a mind of their own. Personally, I prefer a custom call from an Ontario company called Gobbler Stalker both pot and box calls. They are not cheap but have a sound like no other call. I have a laminate box call from them and that call results in at least 7-10 birds down each year. Before the comments start I call for many other friends and family during the five week season before I start hunting hard usually the last week of the season when the big boys come out to play. Best so far is one 27 lbs and another with 1-7/8 spurs and too many 12 inch beards to keep track. With this winter though we will have smaller beards and spurs from wear on the snow and weights will be down.
 
I'm a bit guilty of believing that most times, the higher cost, the better it must be. So last year when I hit the field with a cheap box call, I thought it would not be long before I was itching to upgrade. But then 2 things happened. First, I was successful in calling in a great Tom. Second, later in the season, I called in a hen who sounded EXACTLY like my call. And I mean exactly! I swore someone was creeping up behind me with the same cheap call I had and was f'ing with me! I would call and she would repeat as she got closer and closer looking for me! It was the darnedest thing how she mimicked me and I figured that, to my ears at least, that cheap box call was indistinguishable from the real deal.

Boy this thread has got me itching for turkey hunting!!! C'mon April, hurry up!!!
 
I have a high gag reflex... can't use diaphragm calls... I prefer slate pots and have a couple dozen custom pots and at least three dozen strikers... they give you the best sound and flexibility, but they are useless if they get wet... but most friction calls are... just gotta keep em dry!
 
I have tried slate, pushbox & mouth calls over the years and all that is in my vest now is a box call. Quakerboy Butternut Jr is an excellent box call.
I use a custom home made box call now that sings like no other:)
 
Would feel naked without my double reed diapram, i really became a proeficient Turkey hunter, the day i 100% knew how to use it, the less moving part is the most important thing... With the roosting of a bird the night before... JP.

Use of electronic calls for turkey is illegal..... fyi

I carry two box calls and two slate calls and a push button and like to mix it up a bit..... that being said, my custom hand made box call is my go to call....
 
if you are hunting on private land with no other hunters around i would go with a single jake decoy ..and a gobble call..that will get the big boy to come in to defend his turf..but remember there cant be another hunter in the area because you may be mistaken for an easy target..i do this on my budy,s land and i get 2 birds every year

Push button is best for beginners.

Then gat a box call or slate/pot call after the season and practice for next year.

Even a crow or owl call will bring them in.

I don't agree... push button calls have the worse tone and are the least flexible... slate pots and strikers are very easy to master with a little practice... there is no shortage of training material these days. Might as well start right.
