This is not true, unless you have an early semi auto trigger that has a block on the rear portion. These are not very common.
I found this on AR15DOTCOM. The rear portion of the closed one blocks the disconnect cam on a standard three position selector. These, or similar, were required on some rifles in the US at one time. Not so in Canada.

The US gets bent out of shape due to "constructive intent" laws. Hence, they seem to shy away from M16 parts in AR15's. I may be mistaken, but here the only parts that would be no-no would be the auto sear, or a DIAS or lightning link (which I think only work on the older SP1 type of BCG's).
A lower receiver that has been milled out and drilled for the installation of the auto sear is the other prohibited part as it would be considered a FA firearm.
Hell even drill the third hole/mill out the lower. Until you have an auto sear and install it it would still be semi-auto only.
