I used to deal a lot with anodizing aluminum motorcycle parts. It's basically controlled oxidation where dye are embedded in the oxide coating that all aluminum forms on its surface. It never chips but can get scratched off with a lot of work. I wouldn't call the finish pourous but on most pieces, a light oil like WD40 can really deepen the color and shine it up.

Not quite sure what this means?? I'm curious to know if you have a horizontal slot cut across the magazine body, just above the level of the catch but on the opposite side. I can post a pic a bit later to clarify if need be.
