I recently purchased a new Savage bolt action in .17HMR. I haven`t had the chance to get out and shoot it yet, I just bought it last Monday. I hummed and hawed at either a .17HMR or a .22, and tried on a bunch of rifles that day, and the .17HMR seemed to feel the most natural when I shouldered it. I am a pretty big guy, at 6`4 so my arm span is just as long, if not longer, so it tends to be a bit difficult for me to decide when buying a rifle. I was just curious what everyone`s opinion is on the round compared to the .22. I didn`t spend all the much on the rifle scope combo, under $400, so I am not complaining one bit. Just looking for your guys`opinions.

Thanks,
Kevin

I just bought a CZ 455 in 17HMR 4 weeks ago. I did manage to find a nice day and get it out to the range and shoot it. The biggest thing i can say, super accurate. This confirms most articles that i've read regarding the 17hmr round. I'm really looking forward to using to pop gophers at 150-200 yards this spring :D.

Awesome! I should have also asked if everyone was aware of the 25 round magazines from the Mossberg 715T ar-style .22 is now a prohibited item... I had no idea until this week. I`m glad I didn`t go out and buy one like I wanted, just based on the style, because I am a fan of the ar-style rifles ever since lugging one around when I was in the CF haha!

17HMR is a great, flat shooting round. It does a lot less damage to small game than a .223 would, but you're working at a much shorter range too.

I am a 22 mag guy just like the little heavier lead but the 17mac 2 I had was fun for a little while .so I can see the 17 hmr being a fun plinker

I have a Savage 17HMR as well. My opinion, .22= I am going to shoot that Gopher over there. 17HMR= I am going to shoot that Gopher over there.........in the head.

Great gun for gophers, rabbits, or other stuff around that size. I have taken a few coyotes with it but only because thats what i happened to have on me at the time. I don't think its really big enough for coyotes but it will work. They're accurate, flat shooting and lots of fun but if you reload its actually cheaper to use a 223. I do reload and i still have 3 17HMR's in the safe. Ones for sale, only because i want to use the cash from selling it to get a good scope for my CZ452 Full stock in 17. I'm hoping to use that as my main gopher slayer this year as i never have time to do any reloading anymore.

I owned and loved a Savage BTVS in 17 HMR and the same rifle in 22lr.
Here is my experience with these 2 fantastic rifles: the only real downside to 17 HMR is the cost of ammo: 25c per round vs 5c per round for 22lr.
You get 2-3 times the effective range for 4-5 time the cost!!!

If you shoot a lot, stick with a good 22lr and you'll save a fortune in the long run,
If you shoot that much, you'll be much happier with a 17 HMR.

I've got 600 rounds through my savage 9317GV. Its the most accurate rifle I own @ 100 yds. Plus 10 round mags are available for the savage 93 series, I have one, works great after a bit of vise grip modification. Overall a very high value rimfire.

I can hear the Colonel, and have been hearing him since this round was unveiled.... 'What is it FOR?'

Not clear on what purpose the .17 HMR is supposed to have. On the face of it, redeeming or useful features seem to be in short supply.

I am easy to educate, however.

I love my Savage .17 HMR. Its accurate enough to shoot an actual dime at 100 yards. And compared to the .22 LR its way more fun shooting at distances. Out of my rifles, a .22 drops almost 15 feet at 300 yards and the .17 only drops 6 feet. That's why I cant wait to get a .17 WSM as soon as they come out with a more reliable rifle.

I ve seen some remarkable groups with a 17HMR but I've also seen a gental breeze destroy those groups. I think in an adverse weather condition a 22WMR or 22LR would give them a run for their money at moderste ranges. On a clear day however they can't hold a candle to the 17HMR.
As for the 17WSM I wouldn't bother. You now have a non reloadable rimfire round that performs as well as a 17 Hornet and also needs to be chambered in a Hornet sized rifle reciever....doesn't seem economical to me and rimfire guns are always a gamble as you never know when ammo will be discontinued.

+1 cheap go for 22lr,
longer range go 223.

For same price as 223 why shoot .17HMR? I too would like to be educated.

If you guys that shoot 223 with vmax bullets are getting it for the same price as hmr let me know as I will stop reloading 223. My 223 reloads are a few cents more then hmr ammo.
