Hi all,

New member from Australia here. As someone that's quite envious of your firearms laws, and hoping to visit in the near future, I thought I'd sign up.

Glad to be here.

Thanks! It's definitely on the cards.

I've been told (and heard) that you guys have a fair amount of gun crime. Is that true? Down here we're pretty big on drive-by shootings.

Mate...when I go home to Adelaide for a holiday I pretty much fill my suit case with all the goodies on my return back here.

Great wine, incredible beaches and fishing. Tell me, what guns are you permitted to keep these days and under what conditions? I left shortly after the buy back and Tassie massacre. Im planning to get back there permantley and would like to know what I can take with me.

I assume you're talking about importing guns with you? As far as I know that's next to impossible. We can own rifles, shotguns and handguns. Semi-automatic rifles and shotguns are not banned despite popular opinion, but you need a special license to possess one. The large majority of people who can own them are farmers or professional hunters.

Tell me what you're looking at bringing and I'll let you know if they'd be legal here.

Firearms are broken down into categories.

Category A: Air Rifles Rimfire rifles- Manually operated actions, Shotguns- Break action, bolt action and lever action only Combination shotgun and rimfire rifle. However, I think most states allow unlimited rounds in a firearm as long as it doesn't have a detachable magazine. Last time I checked SA allowed 30 round magazines. Again, I'm not 100% on that. Rifles and shotguns take around 4 to 5 weeks to get a license for.

Category B: Category B Muzzle-loading Longarms Centrefire rifles- Manually operated actions, 15 round Magazine capacity or less. Combination shotgun and centrefire rifle.

Category C: Semi-automatic rimfire rifles and pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns.

Category D: Semi-automatic centrefire rifles, pump-action or semi-automatic shotguns. This is basically impossible to get.

Category H: Handguns including air pistols and deactivated handguns. (Although South Australia does not require deactivated handguns to be regarded as handguns after they've been deactivated). Handguns are quite difficult to obtain. You have to join a pistol club and only use club firearms for at least 6 months before you can apply to buy your own (In some states it could be up to a year). You're also limited to .38 or 9mm, although you can get .45 for certain shooting events. I shot a .50 at a range once, but I believe they're restricted to ranges only. Magazines are also restricted to 10 rounds. Airsoft is completely banned and replica handguns are banned in most states and territories as well.

A few more things you should know.

1) All firearms have to be kept in a safe with the ammo separate (including deactivated firearms). The police also inspect your safe from time to time.
2) You need a genuine reason for owning a firearm. Those reasons are target shooting, hunting or collecting. Self-defence is not a valid reason for owning a firearm.
3) All firearms must be registered.
4) Open carry is completely prohibited. Same goes for carrying knives and pepper spray.

Still want to move? :D

Thanks for the info...Looks like Im sacrificing a few of my guns to do it but if I can bring my bolt and lever guns with me I can live with that. Anything to be warm again and not shovel snow for 6 months of the year! lol

Yeah that's definitely doable. Rifles and shotguns are pretty easy to get. Just fill out some paperwork, get a safe, and wait for the license to come in the mail.

What are your handgun laws like?

I forgot to ask, do you have duel citizenship?
