NR black rifle under $2000?

What are you looking to do with it? My choices would be a new stainless Ruger Ranch rifle and put the extra money into a Sparta stock, Accustrut and a few other upgrades and magazines. Or a Benelli MR1. I would stay away from the KelTec SU-16, seen to many threads on the web with broken receivers. I really like my T97 but they're not for everyone either. It desperately needs the FTU though. IMHO those are the only choices. Occasionally an XCR shows up used on the EE for under 2K, I've seen a few $1600-$1800 in the 6 months or so.

Not sure how good this is but it's the only NR .223/5.56 under $2K that I can think of. T97 - a few place should still have some stock. I have held one in a shop and it felt pretty decent coming from China. Very compact.

Also, semi auto .223 - Ruger Mini 14

Depends what you want from it.
I would avoid the mini-14, the one I had made groups like a shotgun.
The HK SL8 is a great rifle for both accuracy and for reliability but the thumbhole stock and the weight aren't for everyone.
You can get a used Rob Arms XCR for around $2000 and they are decent.
The Kel-Tec SU-16 I was shooting with my buddy was neat but made terrible groups.
I've never shot a Benelli MR1 but they sound like a decent rifle if you can tolerate the looks.
If you can find a used Armalite AR180-B2 they are great, I still regret selling mine.
T97 is decent if you don't mind owning a Norinco and like bullpups.

Most other options are going to cost you over $2000.

does it absolutely have to be black?

magwell adapter lets you use AR mags
cheap like borscht at under 1k, leaves you another 1k for ammo!

At $2000 why not buck up and get into a Tavor? It's bad a$$, shoots well and the most compact package.
It's where I went but as a lefty my options are somewhat limited.

Save up a bit more and buy a Tavor. One of my biggest mistakes was buying everything less than a Tavor before selling everything to buy a tavor. Just get a tavor. You won't regret the extra wait time to save the additional necessary funds.

Both of my XCRs and my SL8 were well under $2000. I'd have no problems buying another XCR (2nd gen), though I'm now much more curious bout the MR1.

...and yeah, if you're already at $2000, save a few hundred more for a Tavor. They pop up at $2400used from time to time.

Tavor :jerkit:
I've shot four of them and they don't impress me enough to make me want to spend $2500 or more on one. If it was $2000 I might consider it.
I've only shot one T97 but it shot just as well as the Tavor and is 1/3 the price. The Tavor is built better but not 3x better. The Tavor does have the advantage of having a warranty and being able to get parts if you ever need them, soon it will have aftermarket support as well but to me it's not worth $2500+

Kind of in the same boat here too. Saw an HK SL8 the other day along with an MR1. Liked the MR1 mostly, except for the wonky bolt release on the trigger guard. Quite liked the SL8, but the thumbhole was too small for my big mitts. Saw an SL8 on the EE a few days ago where the owner had installed a different stock, might start looking into something like that.

can't believe no one suggested a ghost gun? fires 30 caliber magazine clips in less than 1/2 a second. LOL sorry couldn't help myself
