Cast Bullet ####

I only loaded 10 rounds without gas checks, but I dd try seating 35cal gas checks and that didn't work at all. I just got word my 338 checks are in from rouge river arms! Once it gets warmer out I will see how they shoot with and without checks, but I suspect like you zuke I will need them.

I got lucky with my 8x56R carbine. Mine slugged 329. My Lee 205 gr mould casts at 331. I opened my 329 Lee push through sizer to 331. Use the sizer to seat the 8 mil GC's then pan lube.
Shoots groups around 1.5 inches at 50 yds which is probably as well as my 65 year old eyes see. Fun little plinkers when loaded with cast.

I read that 338 could be used and I assumed 8mm would be to small because it's bigger then a normal 8mm. Ohwell, maybe I will have to buy a 338 gun now lol. I was able to get them to seat evenly, but they don't stay on. I will have to order a 329 sizing die from Lee and open it up.

I just picked up a couple of lovely, matching numbers (rare as hen's teeth) Steyr 1886 Kropatschek rifles in Chilliwack last weekend.

As most of you know, even though it was news to me, these were made to shoot 240 grain X .320 in soft lead, paper patched bullets.

The bullets are cast at .318 and double wrapped with greased paper or some sort of foil. Later, the cartridges, by Geneva convention agreement, were loaded with bullets clad in cupro nickel.

What I'm getting at, is that gas checks, although much easier to crimp on might not be the answer. You may need to paper patch.

I've only dabbled with paper patching. I will admit, it is an art form as well as a learned skill.

Don't discard them. See what happens when you place them on the bullet base and then run them through the 0.329" sizer.

wow!! I am impresseed. Nothing turns my crank than a perfect well cast bullet. It is a joy to behold. Don't tell the wife; then again she knows what I'm like.

If you contact Lee Precision in the States by phone they will take your visa # and order. I have done this many times for an "odd ball diameter" projectile. I have also Aloxed regular groove projectiles with great success ; your projectiles do not have to be "micro grooved". It takes very little Alox to lube a regular bullet. I find Alox such a wonder product My Handle on this site is??? Alox!!. I use it for many things but for today's post that's it.

I'm sorry. I just couldn't help myself. I gotta tease you guys a lil' bit. :)

Here's what 467.54 lbs of lead looks like. :)

I wonder how many .177 air pellets I could make outta that?

Here are the latest 100 meter groups shot with the 285 gr Northman. Loaded one grain more CF8506, a half-inch square cotton towel wad, and COW to halfway up the neck.

Removed the Leupold 4X heavy duplex, and replaced with a 6X for today's shoot. The left target is the first one, and first shot was near bottom of the paper. Right target is second three-shot group. The hole to right in that target is from a 270. With the two targets superimposed one over the other, those five shots after scope adjustment are in a tad over 1 1/4 inch.

One of our range officers was there today, and checked the groups through a spotting scope while I was shooting. He was quite impressed that a plain base bullet could shoot that well at close to 2300 fps. He was especially impressed after looking at the bore and saw this was all without leading. Continue to shoot this rifle with no leading at all. Just one pass with KROIL now, no solvent at all, between range sessions.

This Husqvarna 9.3X62 Model 46 has a 24" barrel, and was supposed to become my dedicated skidoo rifle. Was planning to cut and crown the barrel at 20", but my friend won't let me do it. :)

Ted

Ted called friday night and in the course of our conversation mentioned this thread and his results with the C.O.W. loads. After hearing the velocities and no leading in the same sentence I had to give it a whirl.
Two words
It works!!!
I ran 165 beveled flat bases and 169 gas checked bullets out of my /06 today with enough IMR 4198 to average 2320 fps , almost 60 rounds later no leading!!
I mean clean as a whistle.
Try it !!

I took a picture of the wrong ones. Sorry. I only had 4 out of them all with fins. It is a noe mould. None of the other boolits have fins on them. I think I had part of my glove in the mould on that drop.

Nice looking bullets. Can't wait to start casting 22cal myself. Got a Lyman mold on the way and interested to see how their molds compare to Lee's molds in general.
