Installed a Flash hider/ recoil compensater from Iron Eagle. It's installed with set screws on my Kel Tec SU 16. When I fired the first shot my ears didn't stop ringing for 20 minutes , is this normal. I can fire my 7mm and it's not as loud as this. Also I might add that I am new to all of this , sorry if this is a stupid ?image.jpg

Wear hearing protection with any shooting sports! A brake/compensator will re-direct noise back to the shooter increasing the noise level. It is even worse for the folks at the benches to either side of you. I will usually ask or give some warning to people next to me at the range.

Repeat after me:: Eyes and Ears, Eyes and Ears, Eyes and Ears. (Referring to shooting protection)

I did wear my ear protection after the first shot. I'm used to only firing a few shots out of hunting rifles. The range I'm going to attend are mostly hunters so I guess they will be pissed off with me and my cannon. Thanks for the info . One more thing . If it was a Flash Hider only , would it still be as loud?

Yes. It still redirects gas, which in turn redirects sound. If you shoot with hunters who aren't used to a muzzle device, please give them a courtesy warning before letting loose ;)

Normal...you just put a "loud'ner" on your rifle...
My buddy shoots a SOCOM16 with a comp that makes my kidneys bleed, I just learned to always stand directly behind him !! LOL

OK thanks for all the input. Will make sure to warn everyone. Make sure to wear hearing protection. It's gonna be interesting to see the look on their faces! Lol.

Wear hearing protection whenever you can. Each shot fired without it takes a permanent bite out of your hearing.
How big a bite is a function of the cartridge, muzzle device, barrel length and surrounding environment.

Target rifle F-class competition rules prohibit rifles equipped with muzzle breaks. I have no doubt this is in consideration
of the other competitors shooting at the same time on the firing line.

I only fired one without protection and my ears were ringing for 20 minutes,it was really loud,I don't think I could have fired the second one without hearing protection. I've fired my 7 mm without hearing protection and it was a whisper compared to my .223 with muzzle break.anyway I learned my lesson ,and thanks for the info.

Learn the difference between flash suppressor. Flash hider. And compensator.

They are all designed for different purposes and give different results.

;)

suppreser: less noise. Flash Hider less flash out the muzzle. Muzzle break : less recoil. I didn't ask what they were for , I asked if the loud bang was normal.

Tryed to add a smiley face to show that no offense was taken, but all I got were these little boxes. Lol

I still see tons of pics of guys shooting with no eyes/ears on CGN so you are not alone. I cringe when I see some pics of a dude letting his 12 year old kid shoot off a bunch of rounds with no eye or ear protection and usually will rip into that. If you want yo blow your own eyes and ears out thats your call, but at least make sure others are not as naive around you!

I had a beautiful BSA lightweight sporter in .30-'06, the one with the built in muzzle break. It worked, but man, was that little sucker loud! BSA chambered those rifles in calibres up to .458 Winchester in rifles that weighed just 8-1/2 lbs. The mind boggles .....

Scoped, it was so light, I could hold it with one hand like a pistol. Wouldn't have fired it that way, though. From the bench, it would consistently group 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" with anything I fed it.
At one range where I shot, there were coffee cans hanging on nails on the posts between benches. When I fired, the cans on either side of me would swing! People would look at me with "WTF?" on their faces. Shooting that rifle even a few times hunting took a toll on my hearing. That was before 'lectronic muffs.

A 'smith told me the solution - after I sold the rifle. Thread and sleeve the 1-1/2" on the rearward slotted brake. When I wanted the brake, I could simply unscrew the sleeve or lock tite it in permanently. I miss that rifle .....
