I'm looking at grabbing an upper in 300 blackout with a 1/8 twist. I'm sourcing the components since I'd like to reload and I want to be sure I can actually find everything before spending the cash. Those who reload this round what have you found to work well? I've found some IMR4227, my Nosler book lists all the loads as compressed, would this be an issue in an AR? Is there a better powder to hunt for? H110? W296? Also with a 12.5" barrel and 1/8 twist what grain would you recommend?

For supersonics, I'm using H110 (same as W296 as confirmed by Hodgdon). I just got some IMR4198 and AA1680 to see if I can find a load for subsonics. Suputin and CR5 should have some better recommendations.
 
Accurate 1680, LIL'GUN, H110 are all good choices for a variety of loads.
What bullet weights will you be loading? This cartridge can load anything from 110 gr to 225 gr. Supersonic or subsonic?
You might end up having to form your own brass from .223 Rem which is what I do.

Hornady 9th Edition lists 89 loads :dancingbanana:

For my PWS 9.75 inch barrel piston driven AR I use H110 for 110gr -125gr supersonic, Lil'Gun for mid weight supersonic loads, and AA1680 for my 208gr subsonic loads.
I've tried H110 with all bullet weights and it won't cycle my rifle with anything heavier than 130gr.
I have some AA1680 loads with 150gr SST's but haven't tried them yet. Trying to see how light the AA1680 will cycle.

For brass just make it from 223 brass, I use Remington brass but any will do (throw out Norc brass).
Cut it off at the shoulder, run it through your sizer die then trim to final length. It's slow but it's cheap this way.

A lot of the loads listed in the manuals are for use in bolt actions so while you may be able to use some other powders and get them to cycle most won't. The three powders I listed are the only ones I use now.

Good luck, it's a fun and versatile cartridge. Even without a suppressor it's still fun shooting subsonic. They are noticeably quieter and hit steel plate hard :)
 
I'm also in the midst of a 300blk adventure, well, I was but then I started throwing my money at lawyers and organizations and now my budget is gone. Again. This is becoming a depressingly regular occurance.

This summer I plan to get a small reloading station set up in the Edmonton New Technology Society building, due in a large part to me wanting to prep enough 300blk cases to fill a .50 ammo can. I have 200 I cut down on a drill press, but that's fairly messy. Lots of brass shavings going all over the floor. I think for the rest I'll try to make a jig for use with one of the saws, and just cut the brass off at the next. That should give less mess, and more usable scrap for recycling or whatnot. Could be handy if we get the foundry built.

I totally don't get this. I have used W296, which is the same powder and it functions everything I ever tried in it from 110gr to 200gr supersonic and subsonic in my DI rifles.


TrunkMonkey: I have just tested some 4227 loads and they worked fine. 10.0gr IMR 4227 will push a 200gr bullet to almost exactly 1000 fps. Subsonics won't haven enough powder to be compressed but a compressed load is no big deal. We are finding that a crimp helps functioning anyway and a crimp will ensure a compressed load can't push out the bullet.

And I just received my 1:8 blanks. They showed up way faster than I thought they would.

I have used 150,168,195,208,215,220,225gn and all cycle using A1680 in my 9" 300 blackout.

H110, with 110gn, 150gn

I mostly shoot 150gn hornday with A1680.

Going to try some 230gr cast tomorrow.

built by north shore barrels 1/8 twist 13 inch bbl.

so far used IMR 4227 and H110 all with good results and Light bullets hornady 110 grain SST's and Heavy 220 grains lead cast bullets.

I do have stock of 110 grain hornady bullets for sale, have a look in the EE section for reloading equipment and components.

Well I think I'm going to have to retry some loads now that my upper is well broken in. Some of my results came from when it was brand new.
Today is 338 Lapua loading day but maybe I'll throw together another 100 300Blk tonight before the wife gets home from the opera.

Just picked up 400 Hornady 168gr BTHP from P&D for $58/200. Need to dream up a load for them ;)
 
230gn cast (using lead shot) cycle fine and give better accuracy at 50 yards ( 1" ) than 220gn smk.

Lee mold drops then at around .311. I used alox as lube.

11.8gn A1680 will cycle fine but not hold bolt open.

I think I understand, I use trail boss or unique to load 1000 fps plinking loads for my 45/70. You get a really good wack on the target with 405gr bullets. Funny how it might only have 1000 ft/lbs energy, minimal for deer, but it would do a pass through and probably work just fine.
