I know a 45 LC can be shot in a 454, is there a milder cal for the 480 chamber?

The 480 is the milder version (of the 475 linebaugh)

There is exageration for the recoild of those Ruger revolvers, while the recoil is hefty on my Ruger Toklat 5 inch 454 Casull, it's pretty controlable and very much fun to shoot with full trottle loads... JP.
