    $150.
considering it takes upwards of 4 hours, its reasonable.

Can some one briefly explain this process and what it does to the frame?

a hot needle is used to puncture the grip surfaces and reverse melt a hole
it pulls the polymer up and it hardens creating a very bumpy grippy textured surface.

I use a soldering iron but have been considering a woodburning kit with different attachments...it should not take 4 hours, maybe 1-2

I agree, I did up my P226 factory grips and wouldn't say it takes 4 hours. It took me maybe 1/2 an hour. An hour would be good to make sure all the edges and holes are uniform.

if it took you 30-60 mins, you didn't take the time to properly shave and sand the grip down before stippling. its the difference between a pro job, and a backyard looking job.

Hope the above picture isn't an example of a pro job...
