I wonder if it could still fire using era appropriate ammo, it doesnt look too badly rusted, the wood stock probably wouldn't like the recoil but I kinda think that the barrel and receiver would hold up just find albeit pretty rough to cycle but I bet it could still fire

How common is it to put a spare cartridge in the stock?

I would bet it wasn't there the entire time, If I lost a brand new gun I'd make sure I went back and looked for it. I,m guessing it was there much less time than they claim.

It would probably sound something like this:

Day one "he will be back in the morning..."
Day three "It has been three days now, I hope he is OK....."
    Day seven "Fu'ker..."
Day forty two " nine hundred ninety nine trillion bottles of beer on wall, nine hundred....."
Day Thirty two thousand, five hundred and forty three. " one bottle of beer one the wall, one bottle of beer...."
    ......

Could be lots of reasons it was there the entire time...

It's pretty simple. Guy shoots deer ( lots in that area ) puts gun down in a safe spot against the tree. Starts dressing out the deer. Bear comes by and eats hunter. Case solved. Happens all the time.

Well judging by the year the ammo was made (1887), and the year the rifle was made(1882), it was at least 5 years old. By no stretch would it have been a brand new rifle.
