How hard do is I to mill down the barrel and put a flash hider on .. really don't see what all the fuss is about

barrel is already as short as it can go, remove the flash hider and there are threads there.
Those are known as "shorties". Less reliable than the full-size or SOCOM versions according to what I've read. Shorties can be had relatively easily in the reseller/EE markets. SOCOMS are relatively rare. To my knowledge there was only one or two batches ever imported. I sold mine for more than I paid for it as part of the combo. It was unfired, still in the plastic. I made profit and still kept the case of ammo.
Never have I heard about the 18.5 inch barrel being less reliable.
