At a guess I'd say it's meant to eliminate the need for shimming

No more shimming and easily adjusted at the range to tune for your ammo.

How exactly does this do that?

I have one on my bench and another on a customers rifle (which I am currently working on). I understand how the device works, it does eliminate the need for shimming, which is a bit of an advantage, but how can it be used to "tune" a load for a rifle?

It is not a "boss" like a browning shot gun, nor is it an adjustable barrel weight like the Ruger Mini-14 Target model, nor is it an adjustable gas plug like the Schuster....

Thanks, in advance, for your time and effort responding.
