Switch it to high power (there are 2 settings in the menu). I have 6 Baofeng UV-5Rs, the range is closer to 10km in the bush lol.

Do you need or require any special permits to operate these things legally to their full potential? Other places I frequent talk about requiring ham licences and such.
Are you familiar with The Shmoo, Mr. Fisher?

These are great radios and a great price. CanAm, can you also get the Baofeng BF-F8HP.

If you program it's full potential (and transmit) you will need an Amateur Radio License.

If you could talk to any victim killed in crime, they would much rather have had a handgun than a law.
Rights do not exist. There is only law and duty.
Governmental authority is all in a.) your head and b.) their weapons.

Ability is not a crime and accused does not mean guilty.

I can talk to the firehall from a 10min drive away, 12km, with my stock UV-5RTP

Basically anything but gmrs/frs and CB radios require a licence to transmit.

I got my amateur radio license. It's not hard. The radios work well and are popular with hams around the world.
