Do you need or require any special permits to operate these things legally to their full potential? Other places I frequent talk about requiring ham licences and such.

These are great radios and a great price. CanAm, can you also get the Baofeng BF-F8HP.
If you program it's full potential (and transmit) you will need an Amateur Radio License.

I got my amateur radio license. It's not hard. The radios work well and are popular with hams around the world.
