Again, not 100% true because you can get bolt hood open AK mags.but why change to mags that are more expensive, less available here in Canada, and have to change a design for it ?

Only reason I could see for a mag change would be to use 5.45x39.....which would be amazing.
It's not that I'm new to this....I'm just an idiot...

Ive never seen a bolt hold open AK mag for sale. I imagine it would be super expensive here...

Normal 5/30 are more than VZ mags as it is. I don't see any benefit at all.

They're more robust, there's a much greater variety to choose from, and they would probably be cheaper.

However the lack of a bolt hold open feature is kind of a deal killer.

The Yugo AK mags do indeed hold the bolt open with their follower, but they allow it to close after they're removed, so they're not very useful.

Of course it might be possible to engineer a proper bolt open function into the gun that could use standard AK magazines, as seen with some of the newer AK prototypes and U.S. aftermarket kits?
Canada is done, save the West.

I don't know about cheaper (especially up here). I see VZ/CZ mags sold at my LGS for 20-30$ depending on finish.

Because AKs are forbidden fruit here. And apparently they're cheap.
I'd prefer the proprietary mags. Cheap enough and have bolt hold open, which is a big 1UP for me over the AK imo.

They may not be cheaper right now in Canada, but that would change if someone started importing them in numbers.

They are after all the most common magazine pattern in world and available in abundance from a huge array of sources overseas.

I've seen surplus steel mags available for as little as $7 each stateside.

Even new production AK mags can be price competitive, Magpuls for example can be had for only $14 USD each.

One small production rifle like this wouldn't bring in enough mags to drive the price down.
