They're more robust, there's a much greater variety to choose from, and they would probably be cheaper.
However the lack of a bolt hold open feature is kind of a deal killer.
The Yugo AK mags do indeed hold the bolt open with their follower, but they allow it to close after they're removed, so they're not very useful.
Of course it might be possible to engineer a proper bolt open function into the gun that could use standard AK magazines, as seen with some of the newer AK prototypes and U.S. aftermarket kits?
Canada is done, save the West.
They may not be cheaper right now in Canada, but that would change if someone started importing them in numbers.
They are after all the most common magazine pattern in world and available in abundance from a huge array of sources overseas.
I've seen surplus steel mags available for as little as $7 each stateside.
Even new production AK mags can be price competitive, Magpuls for example can be had for only $14 USD each.

One small production rifle like this wouldn't bring in enough mags to drive the price down.
