    That's quite common use for them actually, whether or not its a feature of their design or an official use for them I'm not sure but they are used like that by almost all their users from what I see. Quite a bit of this same technique is used by both sides on the Ukrainian front as well.

    AGS-17 in the video. And primary use for it is indirect fire. The principle of laying it for indirect fire are the same as mortar BTW.

    Majority of soviet indirect fire system have a direct fire capability.
