except the 44 Automag isn't a bottle necked case
my first thought was a wildcatted/reloaded 8mm Kurz as mentioned

I have to agree that it looks close to 8mm kurz. Some measurements would really help narrow it down...

Could it be a 7.62.25. Or a Mauser round

This was a plot device, some odd casings were found that could not be classified...investigation concluded that they were custom-made handloads, a .308Win case cut down and sized to hold a .44 bullet as ammunition for a .44 AutoMag pistol, ammunition for which was hard to find and/or expensive.

From Wikipedia: "The .44 Auto Mag Pistol (AMP) cartridge was introduced in 1971. Its rimless, straight wall case was originally formed by trimming the .308 Winchester or .30-06 case to 1.30 inches (33 mm)."

This would be the only reason I could think of to cut down a casing from a military caliber that was produced by IVI.
The 44 AMP is straight walled not necked down.

    Looks like 8mm Kurz

They made a 357 Auto mag. You form cases from 308 brass. Just measure it and put us out of our misery.
In my favorite dream I'm on the old Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Rosie O'Donnell is also on spouting some dumb s**t. So I swing a large Northern Pike like a bat and smack her right in the fat yap. Debbie Travis and Sarah Palin coo seductively. Johnny and Ed high five me. The audience gives me a rousing standing ovation. Later we pick up Dean and Jerry and head over to Hef's.

I disagree with it looking to short to be 8mm kurz, here's some made from 30'06, also easily done from 7.62x51
