Is that wood stock chipped at the receiver ahead of the sling swivel or is that how it is designed?

This is the first thing that came to mind... I think its a chip.

I was wishing I had snapped a pic of the type 81 before I left and kicking myself for having not so was very happy to see this post. The wood furniture reminds me of a Norinco / Polytech Type 56
