If local to the E Ontario region (Trenton, Kingston etc) I'd be interested.

No expert but I'd think you would be better off with some distance between yourself and the bear. I have thought about this a LOT after summer holiday going through Banff and Jasper where I could not carry a firearm or a spear on hikes with the family. Also forbidden on local hikes in some areas. Best legal option I've come up with is training whole family how to defend themselves with a bo ( currently Chito Ryu karate). I know I'd probably die in an encounter but I'd feel more than useless not being able to do anything if one of my kids is being attacked. Saw a video on You tube where a "? tame ? " grizzly bear lost it on a guy and two chaps fought it off with bo's. They'd come in from behind mighty blow and run then bear'd turn other guy runs up and hits it and so on. After 4 or 5 hits the bear ran for it. I'd also be keen on a close quarters weapons course with sticks, tomahawks, rifles etc if in B.C.

My family has lived and worked in and around bears for generations. We find noise to be highly effective against bears, don't surprise them and they won't surprise you. Wack your tomahawk on the occasional tree as you hike, you'll be fine.

Doesn't work on polar bears. No trees.
